Welcome to the fish bowl

Police love the iPhone data trail:

“When someone tells me they have an iPhone in a case, I say, ‘Yeah!’ I can do tons with an iPhone,” said Fazio, who works in the sheriff’s department high-tech crimes unit.

The iPhones generally store more data than other high-end phones — and investigators such as Fazio frequently can tap in to that information for evidence.

And while some phone users routinely delete information from their devices, that step is seldom as final as it seems.

“When you hit the delete button, it’s never really deleted,” Fazio said.

I’m guessing android phones are probably about the same.

Preemption suit in Nevada

From NRA:

The National Rifle Association is backing a lawsuit filed against Clark County and the City of North Las Vegas in Nevada District Court. This lawsuit aims to defend the state’s firearms preemption law. NRA counsel filed suit on behalf of plaintiff David Hanes in the case Hanes v. Clark County and the City of North Las Vegas.

Vegas law is a bit more strict than the state’s.

Insurance

Wikileaks posts a huge encrypted file. Wired notes:

Cryptome, a separate secret-spilling site, has speculated that the new file added days later may have been posted as insurance in case something happens to the WikiLeaks website or to the organization’s founder, Julian Assange. In either scenario, WikiLeaks volunteers, under a prearranged agreement with Assange, could send out a password or passphrase to allow anyone who has downloaded the file to open it.

Little scary.

A repeat

Every year, a list of people comes out who can carry firearms in NYC. If you were rich and famous, you could make the list. This year, the press is focusing on the Fox News aspect. Ailes and Hannity make the list.

speech to text

Droid has speech to text. In any text box, you can hit the microphone button, speak into the phone and it will transcribe your words into text. I’ve found it to be mostly accurate. Only trouble is I feel silly using it when people are around.

Other day, my wife asked me to pick up bread on the way home the next day. If I don’t get a reminder, I’ll forget. So, I opened up the calendar app, hit the appropriate time and looked at the phone and said “bread”. I started laughing. Wife said What’s so funny? I said Text to speech error. She asked what it spelled out and I told her “boobs”. I said it must read minds instead.

Senate passes excise tax reform

NSSF:

The Senate yesterday passed legislation that corrects a longstanding inequity in the Internal Revenue Code by permitting firearm and ammunition manufacturers to pay the federal excise tax payment on a quarterly basis, just as other industries that support conservation through a federal excise tax on their products do. Currently, firearms and ammunition manufacturers pay this tax on a bi-weekly schedule, forcing many manufacturers to borrow money to ensure on-time payment.

Easier solution is to get rid of the tax.

Now, the bill is heading to Obama.

A trend

In The City (My The City):

Voters ousted the three Democrat incumbents on the Blount County Commission and rejected Democrat and independent challenges to other seats. Commissioners David Ballard, Bob Proffitt and Wendy Pitts Reeves lost to Republican challengers.

Obama’s policy on guns

Dennis Henigan is a sad clown:

It is now beyond doubt that the Administration is determined to say as little as possible about the plague of gun violence that inflicts death and injury on 300 Americans every day. When forced to comment on proposals to strengthen our anemic federal gun laws, the President and his representatives typically fall back on the gun lobby’s canard, “We don’t need new gun laws. We need to enforce the laws on the books.”
