Concealed Carry in NJ

The state needs revenue and wants to charge $500 for a license to carry. But the bill seems to be shall issue.

And how bout they do a $500 poll tax while they are at it as well….. I bet that would go over great!

  2. Borepatch Says:

Why not charge people $500 to vote? You’d raise a lot more money.

  3. Jason M. Rogers Says:

    That’s racist.

  4. Bryan S. Says:

Leave it to NJ to charge for a constitutional right…

  5. David Says:

$500 each year? Wow. I wonder how much they charge for first amendment rights?

  6. Tam Says:

    Well, it’s a big improvement over the $∞ that they’re charging now…

  7. Matthew Carberry Says:

They are shooting their safety-based arguments about shall-issue permitting being “bad” in the foot.

If it’s somehow okay to issue a carry permit without demonstrating need for $500, provided X dollars worth of actual background checks and admin actions are performed (realistically about $20-50 cost, based on the rest of the country) then requiring the amount greater than X becomes a patent revenue generating scheme.

Pass it and then take the $500 to court as excessive.

  8. Diomed Says:

I remember reading some hearsay that the average bribe (excuse me, “campaign contribution”) needed to get a permit in Jersey was in the $1500 to $5000 range. If that were true, this would be a big improvement.

“Shall issue” permits, but do you still need two references to buy the pistol in the first place??

That state is so F’d up. They finance the towns by taxing drivers with tickets from the State Police. In ’05, they nearly went bankrupt when the SP went “on strike” for a few months, in reaction to claims they were “profiling”. News reports stated that tickets constituted as much as 80% of the towns revenue.

*As USUAL, the accident and fatality rates went DOWN, during this “unregulated driving” period. Once the SP went back to normal, so did the accident and fatality rates.

What these idiots don’t seem to realize is that the increased insurance premiums, due to these revenue generating tickets, LEAVE THE STATE. And that is typically much more money than the tickets bring in.

*Per the government’s own numbers. This happens every time a similar situation occurs in the US. I suspect the same dynamics would occur in other Western nations.

I’ve been a gun owner in Massachusetts for nearly 20 years now and I’ve had to pay for my “right” to own a gun all along.

And MA is “may issue” – you can, for no reason whatsoever other than the Chief of Police doesn’t like the cut of your jib, be completely denied the ability to legally own a handgun or semi-automatic rifle capable of accepting large capacity magazines…

  12. Ian Argent Says:

Doesn’t actually change anything, since it leaves in the clause where the permitting judge may place limitations on the time, place, weapon to be carried.

@Rick: the permit will still require 3 references…

It is a grandstanding stunt. Assemblyman Carroll has a “real” shall-issue bill that he saddles up and tilts at windmills with every year, if this guy was serious he’d back that.

    @IAN:

Was conversing with a co-worker from corporate office in NJ. He was giving me grief about staying out of the AR & TN forests because of Meth cookers. Told me he went hunting in NJ all the time. With rifles. I asked him how many handguns he owned. Zero. “Because you have to have references (two I thought he said) to buy them.”

I have several more than zero pistolas.

  14. Ian Argent Says:

That is technically correct. To get a pistol purchase permit, you have to have 2 references. In some towns they also call your employer. He can’t come up with 2 people who he’s OK with knowing he has firearms? Hell, they don’t even have to be in state!

That having been said, he had to give 2 references to get his firearms purchasers card – which, while not strictly necessary, is strongly recommended, and required for him to have purchased those rifles as an NJ citizen.

He’s also not hunting with rifles in NJ, AFAIK. Smooth-bore front-stuffers or shotguns only. No pistol, no rifled barrels.

I have a post on NJ gun laws slated soon.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
