Gun rights and party lines

NRA endorses TN Dem. Redstate to soon write spittle-filled post.

  1. SPQR Says:

I’m a pretty rabid Republican, but I don’t think the NRA should be doing anything but focus on the gun ownership issue. That said, I don’t know if their endorsement is or is not appropriate within that topic. I’d have to let Tennessee people opine on that.

  2. Rivrdog Says:

…and they just endorsed Kurt Schrader, Democrat, of the First District of Oregon, for re-election. Schrader, of course, was a reliable vote for Obama/Pelosi, and has visited a few trap ranges somewhere along the line. He claims a perfect “A” rating from the NRA, mainly because the (D)onks didn’t actually offer any gun control legislation which would have tested his 2A virtues this past session.

Yep, this is the “ya gotta go along to get along” NRA. Something has to change at the top. The whole farging political world is moving right, and the NRA is moving left.

  3. Gmac Says:

Remind me again WHY the NRA endorses politicians that will in the end enable the very people that are so vehemently against gun ownership to retain their majority in Congress?

Tell me they can’t seriously believe that they think those people will not stab them in the back when they are supplied favors to elicit their yes vote on the legislation.

It’s just like Charlie Brown, Lucy and the football. It’s happened before and it will happen again.

What ever, you deserve the representation you elect both in the NRA and Congress. That the NRA endorsement causes others to think its a good thing just adds to the duplicity.

  4. cargosquid Says:

From a Virginia blog called From On High who is protesting the NRA’s support of Perriello who has a poor and short record of supporting 2nd Amendment over his GOP opponent that has a long record:
    http://blogfromonhigh.blogspot.com/2010/10/well-nra-did-it.html

If you have the stomach to see its endorsement of Tom Perriello, who has virtually no track record in the House on 2nd Amendment issues, but whose promises are many, go here.

The NRA, acting on the defensive, also released a statement that attempted to explain this outrage. It can be found here, in “The How & Why Behind NRA-PVF’s [NRA Political Victory Fund] Endorsement Policies.”

Its summary explanation can be found in this paragraph:

“NRA is non-partisan in issuing its candidate grades and endorsements. We base our political decisions solely on gun-related issues, as we are a single-issue organization. By not taking into account political party affiliation and/or non-gun-related issues, we ensure we do not divide our base of support that is united in its support for the Second Amendment.”

How that’s possible when Tom Perriello’s actual record is chump change (and almost a complete mystery) compared to that of his Republican opponent, Robert Hurt, is beyond explanation.

Here, really, is what drives this slap in the face of gun owners here in Virginia:

“We have an incumbent-friendly policy that dictates our support for pro-gun incumbents seeking reelection over pro-gun challengers, as voting records trump statements in support of the Second Amendment.”

    “Voting records trump statements …”

Except that Hurt HAS a voting record…….

  5. DirtCrashr Says:

I’m just glad the NRA is not supporting anti-gun Republican Meg Whitman for Gov. in CA.
She might as well be a Democrat and “believes tough gun laws like assault weapon bans and handgun control are appropriate for California.”
If she win’s she’ll get taken to the cleaners by the Unions anyhow and pwned like what happened to Arnold, she doesn’t know just how structurally messed-up it is in Sacramento and not in her favor.

  6. Ron W Says:

Gunowners of America, which takes a more hardline and Constitutional position on the 2nd Amendment than the NRA, has put out their ratings of Congressional candidates on gun rights:

Here’s their assessment of Fincher and Herron:

    08 FINCHER (R) A

    08 HERRON (D) NR

“NR” means no response to their survey. If someone is truly pro-gun rights, which presumably would agree with NRA members, why no response to another gun rights organization survey?

I’ll be voting in the 6th District:

Here is GOA’s rating in my district:

    06 BLACK (R) A

    06 CARTER (D)NR

I’m wondering if the NRA will endorse another no responder here??

I’ll be voting for the one who has voted pro-gun in the State Senate and responded to GOA’s earning an “A” rating.

  7. emdfl Says:

And they just endorced the former AG Don Lungren(sp?)in California.

  8. Tom Says:

I fail to see how NRA is moving left. They endorsed nearly 200 Republicans for the U.S. House of Representatives and 23 Republicans for the U.S. Senate in 2010. They are simply supporting incumbent pro-gun Democrats who’ve stuck with them in Congress.

Also, not sure why NRA would care whether someone filled out a questionnaire for GOA. Is that a new criteria for them too in addition to having to be a Republican before you get support.

The statement regarding a “pro-gun friendly incumbent” policy has been NRA’s policy for sometime and isn’t new.

As for why they are supporting Periello, it seems pretty clear. They have a “Why’d we endorse” this candidate on their site. Periello’s record may be short but I’m not sure how it’s “poor”.

Second Amendment Enforcement Act — Cosponsored the Second Amendment Enforcement Act that would repeal the D.C. gun ban/registration statute and restore the right of self-defense to law-abiding residents of our nation’s capital

McDonald Case — Signed the pro-gun congressional “friend of the court” brief in the McDonald case supporting the position that the Second Amendment is a fundamental right that protects all Americans

Holder Letter — Signed the letter to Attorney General Eric Holder with 64 other House Democrats expressing opposition to the reenactment of the failed 1994 Clinton ban on semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines

BATFE Reform — Cosponsored legislation to force much-needed reform of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE)

Right-to-Carry Reciprocity — Cosponsored the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act that would extend federal protection of state right to carry licenses and permits across the country

Right-to-Carry in Parks — Voted last year to allow carry license or permit holders to carry and transport firearms for self-defense in national parks and wildlife refuges

Veterans’ heritage Firearms Act — Cosponsored the Veterans’ Heritage Firearms Act that would provide an amnesty period during which veterans and their family members could register firearms acquired overseas between 1934 and 1968 without fear of prosecution

Firearms Interstate Commerce Reform Act — Cosponsored the Firearms Interstate Commerce Reform Act that would allow interstate sale of handguns subject to NICS

Protecting Gun Owners in Bankruptcy Act — Voted for the Protecting Gun Owners in Bankruptcy Act, which would ensure that a person who filed for bankruptcy would not lose their firearms, thereby maintaining the fundamental right to self-defense

Hunting Heritage — Supports protecting hunting, fishing, trapping and recreational shooting on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management

  9. kwikrnu Says:

There are plenty of anti-gun republicans in Tennessee, along with some anti-gun democrats. It is too bad most of them think and state they are pro gun.

  10. Ron W Says:

I agree with supporting pro-gun AND Constitutionalist candidates whether they be Democrats or Republicans. Don’t vote for tyranny and treason from either. That is why didn’t vote for McCain or Obama, just as I didn’t vote for Bush or Kerry. They are all globalists manage dand controlled by the CFR handlers who support tyranny and treason.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
