Statistically, 25 of the 81 “gun deaths” per day, just over 30%, are white men over 40. Nearly 1/3rd of all people who die due to gunfire are white men over 40 who commit suicide.

Incomplete information leads to incorrect conclusions. If 25 white men over age 40 kill themselves with guns per day, the info one needs to know to make some conclusions about this would be along the lines of:
1. How many men of each race are there over 40 in the US?
2. How many men of each race over 40 in the US kill themselves daily?
3. What are the methods of suicide used by each racial group?
4. Then one can compare suicides for white men with all suicides, and suicides by gun with all suicides, for all racial groups.
That might provoke some testable hypothesis about suicide and gun deaths other than “Guns are bad, mmmkay?” as the NYTimes provides here.

As I am in that over 40 white male group, I have been keeping my guns in a locked safe just in case they get any ideas about assisting me in a “suicide”. Some of them probably already have plans for my demise.

The gun grabbers love to tell us we have too many people killing themselves with guns. Do you notice that they never bother to try to figure out WHO is killing themselves? Think of it this way. Of 30K “gun deaths” a year include 10K suicides of white men over the age of 40. That’s an issue. Instead of focusing on the gun, maybe they should ask themselves why suicide? The answer is that they don’t care about the dead except as dead bodies they can use to make their case that “Guns r bad, M’kay.”
I’ts my understanding that the actual demographic that’s hardest hit is actually much older than 40. The men get old, slow down, maybe body parts don’t work so well any more. they get divorced, they get depressed and they check out.
My point is that the gun grabbers are only interested in the gun, not the dead. If they cared about the dead they wouldn’t focus on the gun. The dead are just the source for more blood to dance in.

The majority of firearm suicides are of white men over 40 living in lesser-populated rural environments, and the majority of firearm homicides are black men under the age of 40 living in densely-populated urban environments.
Most firearm deaths fall into one of those two categories. And since they are such different demographics, it’s obvious to anyone with a brain that the causes are quite different, and a single solution like “restrict firearms” is clearly not going to address the underlying reasons that white men shoot themselves or black men shoot each other.

If the old white men don’t have guns, I bet they can check out with pills, ropes, or slit wrists, among about a thousand other means to commit suicide.
If the young black men don’t have guns, I bet they can still commit homicide against their adversaries with machetes, pipes, cans of gasoline, stolen cars aimed at buildings, or a thousand other means to commit murder.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he feeds himself for a lifetime.
Give a man a gun and he shoots himself once. Teach a man that homicide is possible, and he’ll kill by any means available until stopped. Probably by folks with guns.

I don’t care if they kill themselves or not, but the using the word “gunfire” to describe that act is intellectually dishonest.

Maybe it is because we live with menopausal women?
Seriously, though:
The suicide rates for men and women are roughly equivalent. What is missing from the article is that men, being tool users, most often use guns to commit suicide. Women tend to do it by overdosing on pills.
The largest demographic for suicide is men over 65, especially white men. Perhaps this is due to terminal disease? Like the Dr Kevorkian solution.

I’ve attended a few suicide attempt scenes.
Anecdotally:
The hangings, about half the time, get it done. Usually young white males.
The drugs, most of time, don’t get the job done. Usually women, mostly younger.
The car wrecks, most of the time, don’t get the job done. (One did, but he was REALLY motivated. Endangered others, too.) They’re about 2/3 guys, mostly younger.
I’ve never personally seen a cutter finish the job. Girls and emo guys, mostly.
The shooters have been quite effective. Evenly split by gender, older, in my experience.

I have a friend, who was employed by the county, as everything, from bailiff to CST. His opinion, is that the older guys are more thoughtful. The old Vets will wrap their head with a towel, to cut down the mess, that kind of thing. I don’t like to think about suicide. For me, I watched my father battle cancer. For a LONG time. When he gave his doctor his last decision, he gained three times the respect, that I never gave him. My dad was a good man. Choosing to die is a cop out. You should choose to live. If nature gets ahead of you, you can fight it. IF you choose to. He chose not. I hope that not one single person, ever, no matter whom, or where, decides to die, tonight. That is a stupid thing to do.
