I’ve noticed this for a while, now. Today’s “small” drink is about the size a large was just 20 years ago. Today’s “medium” is what used to be a “super-size”.
For some perspective, the normal capacity of the human stomach is 1 Litre (.95 qt), which is about 32 ounces. How many meals come with a 32oz drink? Then you also are putting food in that same volume.
Most 32oz drinks are mostly ice. If you dump a 12 ounce can of soda into a 32oz cup full of ice, it’ll be full. Also consider that most fountain sodas are more diluted than what you get from a can.
Not saying soda is good for you… I only drink diet now… but comparing cans to fountain drinks isn’t really a fair comparison.
Amount in the glass depends. So many places have gone to fill your own that I usually don’t even fill the glass half full with ice. I’m pretty sure I get a whole lot more than 12oz of diet coke, then there is the refill for the road.

Ever been to 7-11? for only 10 cents more you can get a SUPER Big gulp. And put as little ice in as you want. Seen the insides of most Mac-n-Trash places lately? Free refills.
While I’d like to blame HFCS as much as the next guy, The truth is that we’re on average consuming a crapload more soda than we use to.
(That doesn’t mean making crappy sugar or crappy gasoline out of corn just to prop up the price of corn isn’t a crappy government idea)
