I have no problem with my PF9, but my wife limpwrist-FTFs it every other round. There is definitely a tradeoff here: a super-subcompact 9mm is not for everyone.

Like Hypnagogue, I’m ahead of the curve as well. I bought a PF9. My wife won’t shoot it. She’s perfectly happy with her 5-shot .38 Model 60 snubbie, but the PF9 provides seven rounds of 124 grain +P 9mm, and flat disappears in my pocket.

While I get what he is saying, I have to say that I think the push will be to 9mm guns that already exist, and not to a new breed of Kel-Tec PF9 knock offs. I personally dont believe that this new breed (which he says are mostly a younger and more women demographic) will be wanting a pocket gun that is slightly heavier and larger then their already light and easy to carry pocket rocket. I also dont believe that many women shooters/new shooters are going to like the stout recoil that comes with those light weight 9s.
I think that they may definitely want to step up to a larger gun (for either CCW or home defense), but it will be to a full size or compact (maybe sub-compact) guns. Yes, it will probably be in 9mm because thats the least intimidating cartridge to new shooters….. so consequentially, the big boom in the industry will be felt in 9mm ammo, and not new 9mm guns.

When I started shooting different guns with a mind toward purchasing one for myself, I settled on a criteria of 1. Enough stopping power, 2. Not too much recoil, 3. Fit my tiny hands (~6 inches from wrist to tip of my cussin’ finger). I also quickly found that lightweight revolvers pretty much suck – why does everyone think women want revolvers? Or don’t want semi-autos? Or need something lightweight?
My husbands XD-40 and XDm-40 were fun to shoot, but they are big to carry and a little awkward for my hands. The XD subcompacts didn’t work for my hands due to the width. The Walther P22 was OK, it is what I qualified with for my HCP, but it goes “pew pew!” and I want “BOOM BOOM!!!”
At a gun show, as I browsed through Glocks, Sigs and Kahrs, the guy selling them asked what I was looking for. I gave the above criteria. He showed me first a .38 by Bersa … the Thunder .38CC. It is made for CC, with the hammer and other protruding points minimized, and a much smaller profile. However, the ammo situation with .38 made me a bit hesitant. Then he showed me a Bersa Thunder 9mm Ultra Compact. Love. It fits my hands, has the fire-power I want, enough weight to control recoil without being too heavy, can be easily carried in a purse or a holster, and is easy to operate.
Bersa also has a 40 and 45 in a similar small profile. The entire line gets rave reviews, at least as far as my research showed. No clue why they aren’t more well-known or popular … my brother-in-law carries either the .38 or the 45, and I think Breda has the .38 too. But those are the only others I know of.

I know the Taurus haters will jump all over me for saying this, but the P709 is a fine weapon. Sure, it’s got a Taurus trigger, which has a takeup measured in furlongs, but it shoots well, digests everything I feed it, and has 7+1 9mm capacity in a .380 sized package that is still comfortable for me to shoot with my big hands.
Here’s hoping it eventually outsells that abomination they call the Judge…

I just got a Crimson Trace for my PT709. Haven’t had it to the range yet, but it fits well and makes it somewhat less gun-shaped for pocket applications. It will require a different holster, though.
