That would be awesome… Just like arizona. As for the law enforcement doing a good job for the last 50 years. Yeah right… The davidson county metros are the most corrupt in the state followed by memphis and knoxville. The troopers?? Think again. Maybe there are good ones on the small town local level but not near any major cities. Of course the most corrupt sheriff I have every known was a small town sheriff so that goes out the window…
seems to be the mantra of gun control “Guns are different” They’re different from ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, and must be treated differently than anything else.
It’s so sad seeing the gunnies that insist that we need permits to make sure people get their training. Strange how that hasn’t been a problem in the states that already don’t require a permit to carry.
In every one of my hobbies, you have that group that wants the state to mandate whatever training that person already did. Motorcyclists are even worse about that one.
Firearms and driving are similar in the sense that you’re out in public wielding a potentially dangerous piece of machinery. There should be some way to demonstrate that the operator is competent and serious, understands the responsibilities as well as the rights. Heck, the IN CWP doesn’t even require any class or range time; I’ve done both just because I should.
The carrying of arms for self-defense is an enumerated Constitutional right…praticularly here in TN (Aarticle I, Section 26, Tennessee Declaration of Rights) It’s unlawful to require a permit to exercise a right. Or are we going to permit the government to continue to operate lawlessly?
“The right of a citizen to bear arms, in lawful defense of himself or the State, is absolute. He does not derive it from the State government. It is one of the high powers” delegated directly to the citizen, and `is excepted out of the general powers of government.’ A law cannot be passed to infringe upon or impair it, because it is above the law, and independent of the lawmaking
power.”– [Cockrum v. State, 24 Tex. 394, at 401-402 (1859)]
This statement is by the author of that piece, not one of the folks they interviewed:
“If permits are revoked or simply made optional, prospective gun owners would no longer be required to get any training, police wouldn’t have access to the records of hundreds of thousands of gun owners and big chunks of state gun laws written after the establishment of the carry permit would have to be debated again and reworked.”
If the poll tax was illegal why aren’t fees for gun training and permits? If any idiot can vote then why restrict gun access. More damage has been done to this country by stupid voters than gun owners.
“First county governments, then later the Tennessee Department of Safety, were compelled to issue a permit to anyone who passed a background check, paid a $115 fee and successfully completed an eight-hour safety course. It seemed clear-cut, constitutionally sound and most importantly, reasonable enough.”
Reasonable, unless you have to choose between paying a bill and paying to practice your right. You may have been left a nice revolver by your dad, but the ability to carry it may be hampered by your choice of filling a gas tank this month or having the luxury to pay a “poll tax”.
How about a congressional law negating all case law, (Congress regulates the Federal courts) and make them start from scratch again with the Bill of Rights. Arms are permitted. Searches are illegal without warrant. Speech is free. Congress shall make NO law, et.
There’s a world of difference between “should get training” and “must get training”. With the former, the government doesn’t get involved until you actually do something wrong.
As I said before, if not requiring training is such a problem, why aren’t we seeing reports all over of issues in the states that already don’t require permits to carry.
I definitely agree that everyone should know the rules of gun safety. But I’ll never advocate requiring that people prove that they know them in able to carry, or prove anything else for that matter.
When I first picked up a gun to fire it I knew the safety rules. I did not need some course where a state approved ‘expert’ told me I was doing it right. Guns are very common sense. You never hear of gang members accidentally shooting themselves. Though you commonly hear of people with lots of training doing it… I am saying a person who has no training yet handles the weapon properly has more training than a person who has had the training but still shoots themselves…. No way around it… It is rare that a untrained person shoots themselves. It is generally the well trained person getting careless… There is a nice dea agent video circulating the net that shows a prime example being careless but trained…
I’m all for recognizing the pre-existing, natural right of the citizen to keep and bear arms, and for punishing people who misuse their arms to commit violent crimes. I was delighted when my state finally recognized the right to carry a handgun–with a permit. For now, establishing a track record that the freedom to go armed is a good thing is a big step toward restoring American liberty. I think we’ve written that good record all over the country and now it’s time to further explore and expand the freedom.
Here in Texas, open carry of a handgun is not legal except in certain circumstances such as hunting or shooting sports. Concealed carry is legal with a license.
Having said that, my local state representative, Diane Maldonado (D), won’t even answer questions about her position on open or concealed carry. She sends out a form e-mail listing current Texas law, without further comment. In other words, she knows she is on the losing end of any debate in our district about gun rights.
I consider that a minor victory. Now if Larry Gonzales can beat her tomorrow, that would be a good thing.
What’s the Tax required to run for Congress or the Presidency? Where is the Classroom time needed to launch a Minuteman 3 and start WW3, as the President can do at ANY second? Maybe an Age limit to Open Carry, (Adults Only) but permits to exercise your rights?

Why? Well because guns are different…

Well because if they put a permit on free speech or religion their would be civil war…

The only rational argument I’ve ever seen was that permits serve as an IFF indicator for law enforcement.
Only problem is it must not be very good because regardless of permit status, law enforcement treats you like a criminal for carrying anyway…

And what, exactly, is wrong with ANY of that?

Actually, this is WORSE than a poll tax since the right to vote appears nowhere in the Constitution…..

Seems like we could accomplish getting the training done by putting it into public school curriculum. You know, prepare our children to be citizens…

know them in order to be able to carry. This is why I shouldn’t comment when my eyes have glazed over from work.
