If it were me, I’d drive 75 miles to the southeast to visit my hometown.

    You? Not so much.

  3. alan Says:

People in Abilene go to Fort Worth for stuff to do.

  4. Cam Says:

Drink tequila and hang out at my father-in-laws’s.

Stuff to do as a visitor to Abilene?

    Not a damned thing.

i think the locals prefer to kill time with crystal meth.

I would say “Watch the grass grow”, but there’s not a lot of it around.

Being stuck in Ohio, a visit back to Abilene would be a moving feast of hitting every non-chain Tex-Mex and BBQ restaurant serving food with actual flavor I could hit in whatever time I had allotted.

People who think there’s nothing to do in Abilene have never spent any time in San Angelo 😉 (I kid, loved all the times I spent there as well).

Once you sell the last head at the end of your cattle drive, try a hot bath with real soap and hot water, then hit the saloons. Watch out for the ladies of the evening – they are one tough bunch, as likely to rob you blind as sell you a kiss.

This century, you can still get a good steak, a fine tamale, or a cold beer in any of several local establishments, without having to bathe the cattle smell off first.

I’d still be careful with the ladies there.

I have never spent much time in Abilene proper, but I drive through the area pretty routinely. IMO you could do worse than just driving around and seeing some of the landscape.

Drive 45 minutes West to Roscoe, where you will see the largest wind farm in the world. It truly is an impressive sight, and you can spend hours just driving along the dusty roads and looking at the windmills stretching to the horizon in every direction, with their blades spinning like pinwheels. It’s quite hypnotic. There are also plenty of windmills that are close enough to the highway that you can just park your car and walk out to them for an up-close view.

Drive Southwest towards San Angelo and you will be greeted by fine hills great for spirited driving (although coming from Tennessee, you may have us beat there — but some of the best driving I’ve had in Texas is on a two-lane road headed north from San Angelo).

Drive Northeast 30 minutes to Albany for great views — drive up Highway 180 to the West until you hit the top of the hill.

Drive a bit south to Buffalo Gap for an interesting history lesson along with some great scenery.

Sit around and watch the B-1 bombers land at Dyess AFB (those suckers are BIG if you’ve never seen one. From the photos, they look so sleek…. but they’re bigger than a 737, by a lot. Not as big as a B-52, but still, very big.).

And, as others have mentioned, Tex-Mex and BBQ. Sadly, I don’t have any specific recommendations in Abilene, but if you make it to Sweetwater (on the way to Roscoe), I like Big Boys Barbecue, just a block south of I-20 on Lamar.

There are a couple of decent gun shops there, including a NFA dealer. Some good TexMex, decent barbecue and some real good steaks to be had in the area.
There is not a whole lot going on in Abilene, it is slow enough that people from Abilene drive to San Angelo or over here to Midland-Odessa for fun.
A short jaunt west to Sweetwater lands you in the home of the largest rattlesnake roundup, but it is held in the springtime.
Overall, not a whole lot going on.

  13. SgtRed Says:

Eat at Catfish Corner, one of the world class BBQ joints and Alfredos. Hit up one of the 5 Wild Bill’s pawn shops for gun deals. Drive to Perini Ranch and have a steak. Check out a drive-in movie (two screens!). Hunting is everywhere around and deer season starts Sunday!

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
