My wife just asked last week: “What are those metal cans stacked in the corner down in our basement storeroom?” I said, “ammo cans, you bought one of them many years ago at a garage sale…I’ve just added several more over the years.” She asked, ” are they all full of ammo?” Me: “Yep, pretty much, you can never have too much ammo.”
Then Saturday I go off to the gun show at the TN State Fairgrounds and she says, “don’t be coming back with more ammo.” I reply, ” I don’t tell you what not to be coming back with from Belk and Kohls.”
That was the end of the conversation…one of the few times when she knew I was right and that was it. I slept in our bed. But I didn’t come home with any ammo ether. Later on, she asked, “what did you buy at the gunshow?” Me: “Nothin'”
But then I’ve got seven large ammo cans full (9mm, .357, 12ga. 7.62×39, .308) plus some stashed here and there in my gun safe, mags and a drawer.
What happens is the ammo burns off. If you have a competent fire department, they’ll put it out. If you don’t, they’ll run away like scared little pussies.
Ammo cooking off outside of a firearm chamber or ammo can is less dangerous than canned vegetables or cans of hairspray in a fire. (That’s why I’m not real high on using ammo cans for storage, they could, maybe, turn into improvised pressure vessels. It’s tradeoff.)
Now if that ammo can had holes drilled in its side, so you could see from the outside the ammo level inside it, you’d have a marketable idea….for the mall ninjas.
Does the inside of the lid have “Opened” stenciled on it?

Tsk,tsk, tsk. No ammo for a gun? A gun w/o ammo in my house would feel naked and hungry, and I’d hate to see the poor thing suffer.

Ain’t nothin’ more useless than an unloaded gun

And did you sleep comfortable in the couch that night? π

The only time you have too much ammo is when your house is on fire.

Stretch,
That’s one of the reasons I’ve been told not to store a lot of ammo…what happens if the house catches oon fire?

I worry much less about ammo cooking off, than I do about the accelerant power of 8 or 10 pounds of powder!
Guess I need a powder mag!
