Who cares? Its an NRA convention, as long as they have something pertinent to say about owning and using firearms and getting the anti’s off our butts I don’t care if they’re liberal or conservative.
How does that happen? Surely the Republican House memebers are overwhelmingly conservative! Why elect an anti-gun moderate or liberal member??!! Do they want to make sure the Democrats and liberal media like their Speaker choice??
Beth Harwell is a Conservative and always has been. A “A” rating by NRA for 19 out of 20 years. Also a lifetime member of NRA since 1988.
This is a great day for Tennessee AND Tennessee Conservatives!
It’s easy to get an “A” rating when gun bills never make it to the floor for you to vote on. That’s how she got an “A” rating in 2008. When Jimmy Naifeh lost the speakership and those bills started making it out of committee, she voted against them.
The TN Speaker certainly has vote on committees….and to my knowledge a vote in the full House. Speaker Naifeh would sometimes sit in on a committee in order to provide a vote to stop pro-armed self defense bills from going to the full House where there was a bi-partisan pro-gun majority even during his time.
A lot of Republicans complained about Speaker Kent Williams and he was even banished from the Republican Party, but he was fair and even-handed and brought pro-gun bills to the floor for House votes and they passed…even making sure the right-to-carry in restaurants bill was brought up before the Legislative session ended for an override vote of Govenor Bredesen’s veto. I think Bredesen also had a “A” rating from the NRA, but he vetoed a pro-armed self-defense bill that was directly pursuant to the enumerated right in the State Constitution.
An NRA “A” rating doesn’t mean much. I want a public servant who adheres to the wording of the State Constitution Declaration of Rights, to which they take an oath, AS THEY ARE READ ACCORDING TO THE RULES OF ENGLISH GRAMMAR!

Freiheit: She’s not speaking at the NRA convention, she’s going to be the Speaker of the House.
And she’s never voted for a pro-gun bill.

Tell me if things are different in TN, but here in Oz, the speaker doesn’t get to vote unless there is a tie.
This means that having the speaker appointed from your team costs you a floor vote.
