That was a lead story on the local (Dallas) news yesterday.
Instead if exploding, I think it probably just deflected a stray bullet, thus saving the man’s life.

Very strange indeed. It clearly wasn’t an exploding battery as he claimed the phone still worked afterward. Perhaps a defect in the glass?
