Mass produced custom pieces
Tam on Kimber. It has been my experience that, as far as internet fan boys go, Kimber fan boys are just below Glock and HK fan boys in terms of proselytizing.

Yeah, except you can only buy a Glock from Glock. Ditto HK or (for the most part) Sig. You can buy the equivalent of a Kimber from any number of places and often expect better price and quality.

Custom just means their full size model…
And they’re pretty good, but seems like their prices have really shot up. I carry the CDP, and at the time 5 years ago it seemed like the only gun out there that was made as a package with the features I wanted such as melted slide, aluminum frame, night sights, and ambi-safety.

HardCorps,
I am well aware of what it currently signifies.
At the time it debuted, it was their only model, and the choice of the name was deliberate.

My house was built by D—- Custom Homes. The building supervisor used to laugh when I’d submit a change order. Custom is as custom does. It isn’t just gun makers who use that verbal camouflage to lure in customers.

I’ve got a Kimber Custom “Classic” Stainless that I bought new with my Bone-Us Money I got for joining the USMC in 2001. I bought it because I couldn’t decided between Kimber or Springfield, and I couldn’t afford anything else. I decided I liked the style of the Kimber’s rear sight more. That was it. I got to go to Gunsite, and I took my Kimber, because the only other pistol I owned was a Makarov. Everybody oohed and ahhed at my Kimber, which made me feel pretty good, event though I was doing terribly on every course. One guy with a bone stock, but well used Colt 1991 asked me what I thought about it “Well, you’re out shooting me. So I don’t think it matters that much. But I like it. It’s pretty.”
Later, I happened upon a Custom Compact (both of these are the pre-II firing pin safety models) at a very good price, and I bought it. It has become my preferred carry piece, because it’s thin. Both of my Kimbers shoot very well, but I wouldn’t say they shoot better than any other quality 1911 I’ve played with since. Lots of the other makes have features and bugs I like or don’t like, but I basically have Kimbers because I found them both at decent prices.
