What kind of idiot puts a cocked derringer in his pocket? I can’t see any other way that this could have happened! Almost makes me think that it’s too bad that the bullet didn’t go a little more to the left and removed him from the gene-pool so that the stupid would stop there. Castration by derringer… yea… that’s the ticket.
And Jake, since the derringer doesn’t have a trigger guard, even a holster wouldn’t make putting a cocked derringer in your pocket safe. One little push on the butt of the gun and the holster itself might just push that little trigger spur.
I personally LOVE the derringers. Not so much because of their use as a conceal carry weapon (or how fun they are to shoot, because they aren’t) but because they are an interesting throw-back to a time when America was wild and free. Although I have to admit that for the most part the reality wouldn’t live up to the romanticized picture we have from the old western movies. Ah, if only…
Bryan S,
might want to include “hands” on that list of things to keep out of the guns’ pocket, unless you are preparing to draw it.
It’s possible that he was “playing” with it, and not paying attention. That’s a common habit when you are carrying something in your pocket, such as little folders, multi-tools, etc.

I think the moral of this story is that pocket carry absolutely requires a holster – period.

If you carry a pistol in a pocket, that should be the only thing in that pocket. no keys, knife, change…. ziltch.
But thats my policy, maybe not yours.

If you shoot yourself with a mousegun, and then find out about it, you’re gonna’ be really pissed.
