Daley annoyed that police don’t have their gun registry up and running:
Mayor Richard Daley expressed frustration today that the Chicago Police Department has not set up a database to let police officers and firefighters know how many firearms are registered in each home in the city.
So, before leaping into action to put out your fire or take you to the ER, they’re gonna check and see if you have guns?

Given the political interest in it, the more likely application is “Before I nail that man’s wife ( and/or underaged daughter and/or underaged son), I’d like to know if there are any guns in the house.”
Remember, politicians that are fear guns in citizens’ hands are afraid because they know that their personal lives often put them in situations where shooting them would be justified. All those violent assholes on the mayors against guns fear getting capped while their oppressing the masses, one mass at a time. (Center of mass, preferably.)

I wonder what the chance is that the police have put this off because they know it is a complete waste of time and money. This in a recession where the police have had to take cut after cut to their budget and manpower. Only a very few of the people who register their firearms will go on to commit crimes with them, and a vast majority of the people who commit crimes with un-registered firearms can’t be charged with not registering because it would be self incrimination.
I can see how it would be useful if there was a magic way of knowing where every gun in the city is and who is in control of it. That is how this law has been billed to the (rather ignorant) people; however, that is literally impossible, and in no way what this law accomplishes.
