Why are anti-gun activists so violent?

Brady Campaign Board Member Joan Peterson:

It’s just natural to want to shoot someone when you don’t agree with them or have a beef or you’re drunk and can’t quite think straight.

No wonder she wants you disarmed. She thinks you’re as crazy as she is.

I’ve noticed that myself. “I don’t trust myself, and you must be just like me so I don’t trust you either. But if you draw a government paycheck, well then, you’re OK.”

    Thanks for the link Unc.

I agree with Kevin. I’ve noticed it with such regularity among anti-gun folks that I’m surprised if they don’t say something like that.

It’s an interesting phenomenom, because you don’t see people who don’t trust themselves with a chainsaw or nailgun using their own personal irresponsibility / distrust as a reason why the rest of us should be prohibited from owning them.

  3. Ellen Says:

And not only that, they want to stand the capitalists up against a wall and shoot them. Haven’t heard that one often, but often enough.

  4. Tam Says:

This is one of the things that makes me realize that we’re doomed to talking past these people.

I mean, I’ve spent pretty much the last twenty years working around and socializing with people carrying loaded guns. There are arguments and all the personal drama that goes with being in the monkey cage, but nobody shoots each other. Because that would be dumb.

I wonder if japete thinks its natural to punch somebody every time she has a beef or gets drunk? Or does she somehow manage to keep her hands to herself like a sane grownup?

  5. Jacob Says:

No, it’s not natural to want to shoot someone just because you disagree with them.

Seriously, that’s exactly like saying it’s “natural” to behave antisocially; when it clearly isn’t, or society wouldn’t work. People don’t engage in physical confrontation over minor disagreements if they’re socialized.

  7. ViolentIndifference Says:

I posted on another blog that this statement, combined with her acknowledgment that she owns guns… does that constitute a threat?

“I wonder if japete thinks its natural to punch somebody every time she has a beef or gets drunk?”

probably. She strikes me as a person with low self control.

  9. mike w. Says:

Sean – Probably so. Some folks become enraged, raving lunatics over the slightest, most trivial of things.

I’ve had some unfortunate experiences with such people, and Joan strikes me as such a person.

  10. Paul Says:

I must not be normal then…

I disagree with her but I don’t want to shoot her.

And I suspect 99 percent of the Texas population is not ‘normal’, at least to her. Down here an awful lot of people pack guns and others have them in their homes and cars.

But we ain’t shooten each other left and right in the streets.

IMO, the quote is taken out of context, and those are not her words, per se. They are the words that she is attributing to imaginary “gun guys on my blog” — she is writing in a sarcastic sense. Full quote:

Sometimes I think I’ve heard it all since being involved in the movement to prevent gun injuries and deaths. I should know better. There are some pretty inane arguments offered by the gun guys on my blog. Elected officials are not immune from inane comments either. Here is one such example from the Fargo, N.D. City Council. So now gun rights are “natural”? What exactly does that mean? Trees, grass, flowers, clouds, etc. are natural and part of nature. That’s where the word comes from. But guns? Why not? It’s just natural to want to shoot someone when you don’t agree with them or have a beef or you’re drunk and can’t quite think straight. It’s just natural to allow 30,000 victims of gun violence to occur every year in the U.S. We should just accept the natural order of things then. We should just accept that it’s natural to carry guns around in public places.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
