You driving all the time is bad for the environment and causes congestion and annoys stupid hippies. And other stuff, I’m sure. And the reason you drive everywhere is because of all that free parking. So let’s get rid of free parking.

“The bill, supported by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club, provides financial incentives for cities and counties to stop providing free parking on the street and at government offices and to reduce the amount they require businesses to provide.”
This reduces the burden on business. What’s the problem?

I think that this is the money quote from the comments section:
“We also need to tax people for parking cars at home. A home parking tax of say $100 per car per day would make those high income suburban dwellers think twice about robbing the legacy cites and transit agencies of tax money by moving from say LA to Irvine, If they want that unsustainable suburban lifestyle, make them pay. This can easily be accomplished from a legal perspective by the state claiming ownership of the right to park and separating it from property ownership, similar to how mineral rights no longer accede to property owners either.
Just think how world class our transit would be if we had this untapped source of funds. As for those who say you can’t force people, sure you can, that’s what government is for, to force people to do the right thing when they won’t otherwise do so. They may grumble now, but in a few short years, they will get used to it, and in 20 years, the same naysayers will be building monuments to Sen. Lowenthal, NRDC, and the Sierra club. Bring it on!

That’s right, by not living in the city you are ROBBING THE GOVERNMENT of tax money that rightfully theirs. Dear God…

Markie Marxist sez: “Getting rid of free parking is good, but ultimately we’d like to tax people for something more basic and essential, like breathing.”

Parking meters and pay toilets. Better have enough quarters, or you won’t be able to park your car or your butt!
