How to record the cops

From Radley Balko.

Vote with their feet

Census reports fast growth in no income tax states.

Well, that is the point

In CO:

Police have been relying on a database that is woefully flawed to acquire information about those with permits to carry concealed pistols in Colorado.

The database is both compromised by errors and overly intrusive to permit holders’ right to privacy.

We urge local law enforcement officials to take the program more seriously and to overhaul their reporting to the state database.

Aitken Stuff

The fight now to clear his name starts. At first, I was not that excited about his sentence being commuted. But after I realized that it was to set up a legal challenge to NJ’s onerous gun laws, I saw what they did there. Nappen is a smart guy.

Cops on border to get AR-15s

Cameron County, TX:

To prepare for potential confrontation against armed gunmen, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department recently purchased about 100 AR-15 assault rifles to be carried by deputies in their patrol cars.

“We are all here on the border, and as we all know the cartels have some of these type of weapons,” Sheriff Omar Lucio said.

“With these rifles, we have at least the same if not better firepower in case of a major event. We also have to point out that these weapons are powerful enough to penetrate some types of body armor. If we ever get into a tough situation with someone from over there, we’ll be able to go ahead and take care of our people. Hopefully, it never happens. but if it does we’ll be ready,” he said.

Hope and change

All promises have an expiration date:

The Obama administration is preparing an executive order that would formalize indefinite detention without trial for some detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but allow those detainees and their lawyers to challenge the basis for continued incarceration, U.S. officials said.

Sad, Pathetic, and Infuriating

Parents and schools organize a Toy Gun Bash in which, in front of the children, they destroy their toy guns:

Malik Hall, a round-eyed second-grader, looked apprehensive as he stood in line with his favorite toy, a thick, blue gun with plastic sword underneath the muzzle. The 8-year-old was furious when his mother, Amanda, told him he would have to give it up. Yesterday morning, he tried to hide it under his pillow, she said.

“I’m worried,’’ she said. “He might cry.’’

But when it was his turn, Malik strode dry-eyed and with quiet dignity to the Bash-O-Matic and fed it the gun. When his mother approached, he said nothing.

“You don’t want to talk to me?’’ Hall asked. He looked at her stonily and left to retrieve his gift.

Indoctrination starts early, I guess. Teaching kids their things are bad. Evil totems that must be destroyed. Deodands.

And what sort of parent destroys their kid’s beloved toys? This sort:

Diane Levin, professor of education at Wheelock College, said police and parents coming together to destroy toy guns sends a powerful message to children.

You have to ask?

Michael Silence: Who’s watching the watchmen?

Uhm, you are. Isn’t the press supposed to be the fourth branch of government and all? You know, holding public officials accountable and all that? Sure, the press sucks at that job because they want to maintain access to the powerful and are beholden to some corporate interests. But it is their job. Guess that has to change since they don’t realize that.

Quote of the Day

Lyle in comments:

Anything you are still able to do legally without government approval is a “loophole”.

I like that better than my definition.

Change

Illinois loses a seat. NY loses two. Looks like the census will benefit the GOP.

MA and NJ lose seats too.

Tennessee population grows 11.5%, but no new seats.

IDPA explained

Heh.

One of the reasons I’ve never tried IDPA is because my actual carry rig doesn’t fit the rules of their reindeer games. And I looked at the guy I was telling this and said I’m carrying it now. Shockingly, I wasn’t wearing a shoot-me first vest.

DADT and States

DADT is going away. Good. Now, there’s a push for states to ban gays from the National Guard. This is dumb but will be interesting to watch from that whole state militia meaning of the second amendment mythology.

Come and take them

In Canada:

Several gun owners are refusing to surrender a semi-automatic rifle that was imported from China and bought legally before the RCMP retroactively declared it a prohibited weapon.

It’s like registration leads to confiscation or something.

Roku Review

Via Glenn, Amazon has the Roku streaming player for $79. That’s about what I paid for mine. We’ve had ours for several months and use it to stream Netflix. Picture quality is good but, I guess based on Internet connectivity, is not HD quality.

Also, we’ve had a few days where it just doesn’t work. It will not connect or times out every few minutes. Mind you, we can log in to Netflix on a laptop and hdmi it to the TV and it works fine. But the Roku doesn’t work. So there’s something going on with the Roku, if the computers pick it up fine. This has happened on at least four occasions.

It seems to reset itself a lot. That is, if we turn it off a few days then power it back on, I have to go through the 2 minute set up again.

The kids love it. They can navigate Netflix easy and watch every Scooby Doo episode ever.

Overall, I like it. It’s a handy thing to have and you can watch a lot of different things using Netflix. But I wouldn’t invite all my friends over for movie night and expect it to work flawlessly.

Toothfairying is hard

Up in the middle of the night. Sneaking around. No, I wasn’t trying to see the eclipse because it was dark. I was trying to steal a tooth and replace it with a $5 bill. Junior managed to lose her tooth in the most unceremonious way. She was at gymnastics, went to the bathroom, and came out and said ‘here’. And she had her tooth in her hand. No blood. No crying. No drama.

I sneak into her room and slide my hand under the pillow. Grab the bag the tooth is in and she stirs. So I hightailed it out of there. Had to wait a few minutes sneak back in with the five spot. She can be a light-sleeper.

This is pretty cool:

Not sure it would replace the tactical pen. But still.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
