Why is everyone so exercised over the California case when the Ohio Supreme Court issued the same exact ruling last year (IIRC, Dec. 2009)???

If a warrantless search of a citizen’s phone is ok, does that mean it is ok for citizen’s to search the phones of say, government officials? Is there some aspect of the law that makes it ok for cops but not generally ok?
