Dumb law
How would law-abiding gun owners know how far they are from government officials? Unless the statute also requires government officials to wear, let’s say, cowbells and gun owners to carry NFL yardage chains.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.

Make them wear dumbells around their necks, heavy and choking, with a steel collar.

Permanently sequestered to a “forbidden city” perhaps? Not like most of them couldn’t be distanced any further from the population than they are now.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think it is already against the law to try to assassinate a member of congress, shoot a 9 year old girl, and kill a federal judge.
If that idiot truly does not understand that such a new law would have done nothing to stop the attack then he needs to resign.
What it would have done would have been to legislate the two legal CWP holders from being at the scene with their firearms…. I guess I should also point out that they murdered no one that day.

Having Jon Stewart tell you that your gun law is stupid is like Charlie Sheen telling you you’re doing too much cocaine or Orpah telling you that the cake tastes bad.

It should be like the Tex Avery “hunting safety” cartoon:

Make’em implant RFIDs and issue detectors with every gun sale…
January 13th, 2011 at 3:38 pm
For once Stewart is pretty much on the money.
January 13th, 2011 at 3:40 pm
Yeah, Stewart hits the nail on the head with this one. However, I don’t think the sanity will last.
January 13th, 2011 at 4:01 pm
Wow, coming from Stewart, We’re so winning!

I don’t think the actual text has been introduced yet (indeed, I can’t find anything from Rep. King that resembles it on Thomas), but the first report about the intent I saw included language about “knowingly” bringing the firearm within that distance.
The law is still pointless, stupid, and of dubious Constitutionality with that clause, but it’s at least less apt to make otherwise law-abiding people criminals for not being psychic.

Wonder what the distance rule for breaking wind will be.

A classic case of an idiot lawmaker speaking before thinking.
Proposals like this should cause the elected offical to lose his or her job in the soonest election.

Wonder what happens when a congressman wants to go hunting with a friend, would that friend be immediately arrested? Or would they just have to hunt 1000 feet away from each other at all times and carry on a conversation via radio?

Jon Stewart, now stealing material from Tam?
“I have a better idea: Let’s make it illegal for important federal officials to come within a thousand feet of decent people. Failing that, maybe we can make them wear some kind of distinctive garment and carry a bell so we know where they are and can stay away.”–Tamara K

“How would law-abiding gun owners know how far they are from government officials?”
Markie Marxist sez: “Who said anything about them knowing? We want to criminalize them, not educate them.”

We have a winner!
January 13th, 2011 at 8:54 pm
That’s the beauty of it! Carolyn McCarthy can visit Tucson and drive down every street, while Sheriff Dupnik has his goons break down every door to seize the guns inside.

“Having Jon Stewart tell you that your gun law is stupid is like Charlie Sheen telling you you’re doing too much cocaine or Orpah telling you that the cake tastes bad.”
Well, to be fair about it, we already have Bill Maher telling us we’re ugly.
January 13th, 2011 at 10:51 pm
Oh my Lord. How dumb can it be for Congressman King to even propose something like this?
As for the clip on gun sales spiking up, it seems whenever there is a tragedy where there maybe a potential for ridiculous gun legislation to be introduced, people go out and get guns why they still can.
How sad it is the elected officials we have in office. Couldn’t we do better?

My guess is that the compulsively law-abiding would use optical or laser rangefinders. The information received thereby would also help with estimating projectile drop.
January 14th, 2011 at 1:26 am
Tamara’s right, but she doesn’t go far enough.
We need a law forbidding Congressmen from approaching armed citizens OR high-value areas.
Such as Capitol Hill.

Everyone is giving Jon Stewart too much credit.
He only says it’s a dumb law (which it is) because a Republican is saying it.

It’s not hard to tell when one’s around, but what if the wind’s in the wrong direction?
