You can’t legislate smart

Cartridge Names

They mostly don’t make sense. But here’s a good read on why some cartridges have the name they do.

Paying for stuff

There’s an app for that. I look forward to the day where I don’t carry debit or credit cards and stuff is located on a secure device that folks cannot access and that I can wipe remotely.

Math doesn’t lie

Math dictates that loaded chamber indicators do cause a higher failure rate in firearms. A lot more here.

David Hardy looks at the 86 bill, which is either the greatest bill ever or the worst bill ever depending on which gun nuts you’re talking to.

Lists

Eventually, we’ll all be on one:

GOP to look at federal gun laws

Thanks, GOP.

Staffers from the House Judiciary Committee will meet with Obama administration officials Thursday to examine the effectiveness of federal laws designed to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, according to a Republican aide with the panel.

The closed-door gathering will focus on whether a federal system of background checks is working to block gun sales to the mentally ill and others barred from owning firearms, the aide said Tuesday. Staffers from both parties will attend, as well as officials from the FBI and possibly the Justice Department, the aide added.

And if they’re not effective? Which they’re not. Also, considering the Mayors Against Guns proposal to require states to report domestic violence, mental records, and drug use to the NICS database. They tried that unfunded mandate stuff before and it didn’t work. Also, this is scary:

Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), come on down. Earlier this week, Mr. Schumer proposed that federal officials who learn of an individual’s illegal drug use must report that information to the FBI. The admission would then go into a federal database, and be used to deny the individual the right to purchase a gun.

Soon the .gov will be restricting all manner of things based on what list you’re on.

Get with the program, there’s funding at stake

Getting my social media on

I’ve not mentioned it in a while but for you folks who want to follow me on the Facebook, the page is here. And for you twitterers (which I don’t get), I am here.

Nothing new there, just the same stuff. But some people prefer facebook and twitter.

For the record

The president not mentioning gun control is apparently big news, to the dismay of the press and the anti-gunners (but I repeat myself). We’re winning.

A civil rights victory

In South Dakota:

South Dakota lawmakers have proposed changing the state’s concealed weapons law to allow permits to all legal residents, weeks after an immigrant living in Sioux Falls sued the state.

A handful of lawmakers from both parties introduced a bill Tuesday to make that change. The group includes Senate Republican Leader Russell Olson, who signed onto the bill after saying earlier this month that he didn’t see a need to change the law.

Original suit mentioned here. I wonder which Larry Pratt will comment on this?

Wouldn’t get my hopes up

This is making the rounds but I wouldn’t count on it:

“I am pleased to report that all branches and offices within ATF have given the official okey dokey to eliminating the CLEO signature requirements for NFA Forms. This includes Counsel’s office and the National Sheriffs’ Association! The package has been sent on to the Department of Justice with recommendation for approval. The package will include:

1.Elimination of CLEO signature requirement.
2.Institution of CLEO “notification” similar to an FFL application. (A copy of the form will be sent to the CLEO as opposed to asking for permission.)
3.Trusts and LLC’s and corps will still be available for use.
4.In the event of #3, a NICS check will be required when the weapon is physically transferred.
Unknown is whether the Citizenship Compliance form will be eliminated and merged into the various NFA forms instead of being a separate nuisance. ATF is leaning toward elimination.”

The NFATCA has been working for several years to make this happen. I am proud to say that we have pushed this agenda item further with better results than we ever have before. ATF and its various branches have reviewed all of the potential issues and suggestions that we have presented. At this point, ATF has actually submitted the issue to the Department of Justice for final approval. We have never been able to get this issue out of ATF’s “universe” before. At this point, it could be a matter of weeks or months before we receive final approval. I am hoping that the timing of the November release of several updated NFA forms is a good coincidence. That was the long answer. The short answer is yes, the process is in full swing.

SOTU Stuff

I didn’t watch. I didn’t really have a desire to see Obama kick off his 2012 campaign with a bunch of pie in the sky that he won’t do. I didn’t watch the rebuttal either, though I did hear a few minutes of it this morning on the local affiliate of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. It was a good speech about liberty and cutting spending and cutting government. And then I remembered Oh, he’s a Republican. So he’ll support those ideals as long as he’s in the minority.

You ask, I answer

Reader Ash:

What’s wrong with a loaded chamber indicator? I’ve found them useful for verifying weapon status in the dark, as opposed to a press check.

Nothing, if they’re done right. In this particular case, I was talking about the Ruger MKIII’s which is just a horrible design. It inconveniently protrudes and is a hideous color. I have loaded chamber indicators on a Para LDA and a Smith and Wesson M&P9. And they’re good designs. But I don’t use them.

I don’t buy the ‘any added complexity invites mechanical failure’ argument for a modern firearm.

I don’t buy that either but I have binary mentality when it comes to guns. If you want it to go bang, pull the trigger. If you do not want it to go bang, keep your boogerhook off the bangswitch. Anything else is extraneous fluff that I don’t want to be bothered with. Like TD said Is gun. Is not safe. Oh and stop touching it.

No gun control in SOTU but . . .

the overly excitable hack Matthews says that’s coming in a separate speech. Seems Obama is saving it for his smaller audience, to maybe shore up a base. It is rough to be “progressive” these days. Their guy has made minimal progress on their goals so maybe he’s throwing them a bone. Who knows.

Sebastian wonders if he’ll follow through. Sounds like a good way to lose more house seats to me. Meanwhile, others say he won’t touch it:

For a decade and a half now, conventional wisdom has held that for a Democratic president, gun control is a political loser. And unfortunately, that conventional wisdom is absolutely right. First of all, there’s no clear majority for tightening America’s gun control laws.

Which is funny given that came right after boner:

Barack Obama surely believes that America’s gun laws—which allowed Jared Loughner to buy the ammunition with which he shot 18 people in a matter of minutes—are insane. So do most people who’ve given the topic any thought.

Actually, once you’ve given it thought or researched it for a moment, you understand that gun control is what we do instead of something. Symbolic, low cost, and accomplishes nothing other than appearing to have done something.

Was the Hugh’s Amendment really passed

As a practical matter, yes. I don’t know that not obeying the house rules would convince any court to overturn a law, as I don’t know if courts concern themselves with legislative rules. That said, folks are up in arms about this video which is supposed to show that the 1986 machine gun ban did not really pass the House:

The action starts at the 8 minute mark. I can’t tell, honestly. Watching it twice, it’s hard for me to figure out what’s going on. Several pages of discussion at arfcom on the issue. Honestly, it’s mess and I can’t tell what happened.

Amazon coming to TN?

Amazon wants to build a facility or two in our state. Which would mean that they’d have to start collecting sales tax from Tennessee customers. Amazon is trying to prevent that having TN customers pay sales tax. Good.
