Nickels is money too
And they’re worth more than $0.05. Excluding the cost to get to the components. it is an investment that only has an upside.

Only has an upside, bah! Inflation guarantees that when you spend that nickel, it will be worth less.

Had to laugh at the 7.3 cents for the materials in the nickel. Made me think of Groucho Marx bit on the seven cent nickel.

Dumb.
Between the issue of destroying/defacing legal tender to be a felony. And, assuming you can find someone willing to melt it down for you that it’s still profitable (it’s not).
There are so many holes in judgment here. The only pro is that each will be worth .05. There is no down side, unless you factor that your money could be invested somewhere it’s actually making more money.

Ya, 7.3 cents as RAW material. Whats the smelting and separation costs for the materials? How about transportation to the buyer/ user? When pennies were copper it was worth it to buy as a raw material, the value was much higher per unit an the extraction costs were low, this is foolhardy at best.
