I read the book. I muddled through it eventually. It was like an ongoing punch in the nads, and well before I was halfway through I made my mind up the movie was one I’d not bother to see. How they thought it was a good idea for the screen I’ll never understand, unless they’re into some serious S&M.

What I got from the movie is that it was a Nuclear Winter Apocalypse, which was obviously brought on by a Nuclear war, which seems highly improbable in a post-cold war world. I thought it odd that so many people would have to resort to cannibalism, even though I’m sure a few would. If the sun was gone for, like, a decade, there would still be plants and trees that would survive. Seeds at least. There would have been plenty of rodents running around, taking advantage of all the unattended corpses as well. There would have been Cockroaches aplenty, and while not appetizing, they’d make pretty good food compared to humans who can fight back and kill you. The movie gives the impression that humans would be the last thing to die, and the only thing that humans could eat would be other humans, which is silly. Lots of things would out survive us.
Basically, I liked it, but there was too much cannibalism for it to be realistic, imho.

A mega volcano blew 75,000 years ago and dropped global temp several degrees and brought the human race from 100,000+ down to 2000 to 5000. (Geology shows the volcano. DNA analysis shows a bottleneck in population diversity at this time). These people were adept at surviving off nature, yet 95% to 98% died. Yes I know this is just a story, but it may be more possible than some care to think. As for the movie, what happened to all the ammo we’ve been hoarding since Odumbo got elected? Two rounds? Sheesh! They needed to look a little harder!

That’s interesting, Wild Bill. I had not considered a Volcano, but there is a reference as to “when all the clocks stopped” suggesting an EMP. He looks out the window and sees bright lights and immediately begins filling the bathtub and the sinks with water, whereas if it was a mega volcano, he’d probably be too dead to look out the window if he was close enough to see light from the blast.
