Backup Cameras
What happens when you’re ruled by bureaucratic fiat: Requiring back up cameras in all cars. Will cost $2B. It’s your money.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.

We just upgraded our family mover and for the first time have a vehicle with a backup camera. I thought it would be great but have found I don’t use it that much. Plus the fisheye lens distorts perspective too much.

If the goal is to make driving more expensive so as to decrease that activity, the idea works. It could be worse – the government could have mandated that cars not have any blind spots at all and watched the hilarity that followed, as car makers tried to meet safety standards while surrounding the vehicle in glass.

I doubt most people who have them do. After all, when you’re backing up, you should have your head turned so you can see behind you while being able to see what’s approaching from the side using your peripheral vision (you know, so that when you’re backing out of your parking space you can see the twit driving through the parking lot at 30mph before you pull out enough that he hits you).
I do use the ones we have in our ambulances, but that’s an exception – there is zero rear visibility without them, except for the side mirrors, so they are very useful for spotting idiots and obstacles (often one and the same) that are in the blind spots created by the box.
They are very useful in certain cases, but those just aren’t worth mandating them like mirrors are mandated.
