Gumption
ATF actually has the balls to ask for more funding in light of their recent colossal screw up. If my presumptions are correct, they were doing this to get more money. And now that they royally screwed it up, that’s another reason to ask for money.
Doing dangerous things is apparently win/win for them.

This is scary too:
ATF Agent: “We’ve probably allowed more guns into the country than guns we’ve stopped”

Of course. All they have to say is some variation of “well if we’d done NOTHING it would’ve been even worse.”

And with the screw-ups we have in power in D.C., they’ll get it.

The ATF needs to be disbanded and its legitimate functions transfered to a less corrupt, more competent LEO.

SPQR: The Treasury already handles SOT taxes directly. The FBI already has its own bomb unit.
Order the FBI to enforce armed felons laws, and order ICE to step up and investigate arms smuggling.
Then defund this bureau, have the GSA sell their stuff, and put copies of every hard drive in the bureau up on the internet.

Kristopher and SPQR
you’ll also have to pass a law prohibiting everyone in the BATFU from working in law enforcement ever again.
Else, I think you’ll see swelling in the ranks of the TSA or local law enforcement.

I seem to recall the possibility of ATF being disbanded coming up about thirty years ago, and NRA freaking out over it enough to kill the idea. Something about having FBI enforce the gun laws being a frying pan-into-fire deal.

Nobody figured out this was their modus operandi after Ruby Ridge and Waco?
Every time there are budget hearings where the ATF might lose out, the ATF does something flashy to get attention.
IMO they should fold all the forensic stuff into DOJ/FBI and repeal and defund all the NFA stuff, including the transaction register. If it’s no longer required to register, there’s no need to maintain the registry or to hunt down people who put shoulder stocks on their pistols.

I’m trying to figure out who SPQR thinks will be less corrupt and more competent. You don’t have to be a Christian believing in original sin to see that we’re all made of the same stuff. There isn’t any group less corrupt and more competent because they are all populated by us. What we need are narrowly defined laws that accomplish small defined goals that can even be implemented by normal people.
Anything more is asking to be ruled by super men and me and Lex Luthor are against that.
