I’m a firefighter, and as far as I know, we have never done that. Of course, this is the south, where nearly ever home has a gun in it.
Do they run the serial number on all items in the house, or just guns?

Thats the Pittsburgh police for you… assume that you have committed a crime, because you have a gun. Its supposed to be illegal here, but the PA state police keep a database anyhow.
Its pretty useless on longguns too, because there is no checking or FFL needed on long gun sales.
