When the British put a tax on salt, a dietary necessity, in India, Ghandi led a protest march to the sea where he and his followers made salt themselves, and refused to pay the tax. The tax was repealed, after much difficulty.
Not recommending anyone go that route, unless your newspaper comes printed on 2-ply, but I am wondering….
What if I manufactured a multi-ply soft rolled paper and marked it as “Inefficient Paper Towels” or “Really Poorly Designed Writing Paper” and sold it. Would the tax apply?
Similarly, a 2.5 gallon toilet tank could be sold as a “Ceramic Vessel for In-Home Water Plants”, a rugged top loading washing machine could be sold as an “Industrial Salad Spinner” and 100 watt incandescent bulbs could be sold as “Expensive Heating Elements.”
I think there is a market niche a mile wide for such products.
Unintended consequences being what they are, the replacement of tissue paper with, shall we say, more difficult to process substitutions, would likely lead to an increased burden on sewage treatment plants.
I think the tax on toilet paper is seriously wrong. What about the people with bladder disease, such as Interstitial Cystitis, known as IC. This condition is a pain bladder disease that causes people to urinate 50-60 times per day. Can you imagine the amount of toilet paper they have to go through, how the tax and increased in cost will seriously affect them. Not to mention all the other medical expense that goes with having IC. I think this tax increase should be flushed down the toilet. Come on people, this can have a big impact on those patience.
Wow seriously a toilet paper tax.. What are they thinking… Thats just rediculous people like my mom who has ic and uses alot of toilet paper would spend a fortune… Its just wrong..
Ok whom ever came up with this idea has lost there mind!! I believe that you think that it would make ppl stop the amount used, well let me inform you for 10 million Americans alone it’s not possible! That is just a ballpark figure of ppl who have IC Interstitial cystitis! I personally without my family go thru a 24 roll pack atleast a week! There are several other diseases that other ppl have that causes them to use more also!!! I already pay more for my sewer than actual water couldn’t imagin it going up! With this disease I can barely afford toilet paper now!! This has truley upset me and I promise to fight this our lifes have already been taken away, there’s no way I’m gonna sit back and let the government make it to where I can’t wipe my butt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully that will wipe out their debt. Unless enough people raise a stink about it and get themselves in a wad.
I’m really on a roll.
OK, I’ll stop.

There’s talk of one in Omaha, too.
I think it’s a conspiracy by the local newspapers to increase circulation.

They did this in Joisey. The idea is so corny, it’s nutty;

At 10 cents per roll, I’d look into the “really really big roll” loophole. They’re already on the market anyway.
I prefer fast food napkins while backpacking. They can stand a little humidity and still work OK. So there’s the Kleenex loophole too.

Better to tax the B.S. the idiot politicians spew.

The least they could do is perfect the “three seashells” device before taxing toilet paper into oblivion.

Yeah, but will the City pay the tax also, or will they just Exempt themselves like most Municipalities do?

Non olet!

If this spurred an increase in bidet sales, it would lead to increased sewer usage while simultaneously dodging the ridiculous tax.

Planned Parenthood
With apologies to Joyce Kilmer, author of Trees
I thought that I would never see
A program sacred as P.P.
A program that Barack will back
Against the GOP attack.
A program Biden will defend
Against the budget cutting trend.
A program for which Nancy fights
Beneath the flag of women’s rights.
A program for which Harry Reid
Would shutter government indeed.
When deficits begin to squeeze
We see their true priorities.
While other programs come and go
This sacred cow must stay just so.

Hopefully, there won’t be an attempt to ban high-capacity toilet paper rolls.

Unintended consequences being what they are, the replacement of tissue paper with, shall we say, more difficult to process substitutions, would likely lead to an increased burden on sewage treatment plants.
So they’d need more funding.
So they’d raise the tax on TP some more.
Which would lead to more avoidance.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
