Heck, they had these sixty years ago when I was in grade school — round glass globes filled with red-tinted carbon tetrachloride, to be thrown at fires. The powers that be then decided carbon tet didn’t get along with people any better than with fires, and they vanisheddddd.
The primary manufacturer of this type of extinguisher in the US was a Company Called “Red Comet”, when they were used properly, the grenade type extinguisher was quite effective. Sold primarily to homes and business until WWII when their sales market switched to the armed forces. However, as Ellen noted the use of this type of extinguisher came to an abrupt halt when Carbon Tet was banned and subsequently so did the manufacturing portion of Red Comet.

You can also get ones for chimney fires. They look like road flares and create CO2.
