ORNL’s Reticle Compensating Rifle Barrel Reference Sensor

This is cool:

The fiber-optic laser-based sensor system precisely measures the deflection of the barrel relative to the sight and automatically adjusts the crosshairs to match the true position of the barrel.

Most tank main guns have this feature. The system keeps track of the “droop” of the barrel as it hets up and automatically compensates for it in the sighting system.
FWIW I have seen a rifle sight that is effectively a camera system. All you do is enter the origanal ballistics for the round you are using. After that, everything is electronic. It ranges the target and the recticle automatically sets up for the distance. The serious version of this system can actually “see” wind changes and compensate for that.

Last I heard, DARPA was working on a system that would do that and would use lasers to measure the wind downrange and automatically compensate with the reticle….

Have a friend who has hiscompany’s version of that scope on his gun, aero. Built by a very large defence contractor, it is. It’s more like a specialized camera mounted on a rifle.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
