At the moment I can’t think of a worse platform than the AR for black powder. Still; why not try it if you don’t mind the cleanup? I’m with Weer’d on this. I’ve considered loading 30-30 cases full of BP, but then I think of taking the ’94 all apart…
If you really want to use black though, a gun that was made for it is a pretty good choice. The little cartridges designed for smokeless just won’t have the same energy when loaded with black. Those that’s designed for it have more powder capacity. I know I know– it’s fun to play around.

Reminds me of Harry Turtledove’s book, “Guns of the South” and trying to run AKs on black powder.
