Ten Greatest Metal Bands
A discussion. Depends on the definition of metal. I don’t think, for instance, System of a Down is metal.

Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are 1 and 2
July 28th, 2011 at 10:07 am
Black sabbath and Iron Butterfly are 3 and 4..
July 28th, 2011 at 10:26 am
Metallica is number 5 though a few song they perform are almost number 1.. Wherever I may Roam…
July 28th, 2011 at 10:30 am
I do consider System of a Down to be metal. On the other hand I don’t consider Led Zeplin or Pink Floyd to be metal, I like them but they’re not metal.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:48 am
I don’t see why “The Big Four” aren’t one thru four. Iron Maiden too is top 5. You can argue about what order the top 5 go in though.
Led and Floyd are about as metal as REM is Alternative.
Is Judas Priest really Metal? That is tough for me. I am a fan, but they are kinda close to GNR or Motley Crue in my mind, which isn’t quite Metal.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:49 am
Please.. Most of the groups that came after Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd say that the latter groups were their inspiration….
July 28th, 2011 at 10:50 am
Also, Manowar is top 10 for sure. You’ve probably never heard of them, but watch this shit sometime.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:53 am
John, that is irrelevant. A lot of them say that they were inpired by Clapton and Chuck Berry too. They weren’t Metal.
Hitler was inspired by Waggner…that doesn’t make Waggner a Nazi.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:56 am
Iron Maiden is the essence of metal. Manowar too. Too much false metal.
July 28th, 2011 at 10:57 am
HL, Hitler being inspired by Wagner does not make Wagner a Nazi. Wagner being a vicious anti-Semite does help push him into that category, though.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:12 am
Sure Ed, but wouldn’t you agree that the distinction between Hard Rock and Metal is at least as evident as the difference between being an anti-semite and a Nazi?
I mean, Mel Gibson is an anti-semite, and as bad as he has come across, I don’t think I could rate him up there with Himmler.

Doesn’t rank Scorps nearly high enough, and no Van Halen?
July 28th, 2011 at 12:33 pm
Sabbath rules, period.
July 28th, 2011 at 1:17 pm
Hipster metal. I know the top 10 metal bands, but you’ve probably never heard of them. I do have “Liquid Metal” as my station on Sirius, so I get some badass stuff.
July 28th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
No Tool mentioned at all. Not even in the 50 bands at number 10.
And sisters of mercy is not metal.
July 28th, 2011 at 1:51 pm
Tool is metal? I thought it was just angrier hippie music.
July 28th, 2011 at 2:07 pm
How many hippies would tell Cali to “learn to swim?” lol
July 28th, 2011 at 4:22 pm
Yeah; I think Lead Zeppelin and Iron Butterfly were the reason we have the term “Heavy Metal”, but today’s “Metal” is pretty far removed.
July 28th, 2011 at 4:50 pm
Whatever works for you, as long as Ozzy and Lemmie are there.
July 28th, 2011 at 7:14 pm
Heh, have you ever listened to Iron Butterfly other than “In a Gadda Da Vida”? It was like stuff you’d hear on the Brady Bunch I’m tellin ya. That song was so far out of their milieu, it was like a different band did it. I listened to the B side like twice, the second time very ironically.
July 28th, 2011 at 7:54 pm
HL, how is Judas Priest anything llike GnR or Motley Crue?!?
Dude, Halford is the Metal God.
Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin after Sin, Hell Bent For Leather each could compete for greatest metal album ever – and that’s before you get to British Steel, Defenders, Ram It Down, etc.
July 28th, 2011 at 7:57 pm
After reading comments, I’m adding best “metal” bands to the list of debates to steer clear: Best caliber, politics, religion, and “best” rock bands.
July 28th, 2011 at 8:00 pm
And if your talking Led Zep type influences, NO ONE was a bigger influence on metal than Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. Without them, there’s no Zeppelin. There’s no hard rock.

Fuck Ozzie. My vote goes to RJD.
July 28th, 2011 at 11:51 pm
Agree w/ some of his rankings, BUT — Tool has to be in the top 10. Nothing turns a gangsta wannabee’s guts to water faster than Tool cranked at him at “11”.
July 29th, 2011 at 12:11 am
Fairey Aviation and Foden, and danged near any factory in Britain, used to have excellent metal bands, as does the Salvation Army to this very day.
July 29th, 2011 at 12:17 am
P.s. Now as a woodwind guy myself, I prefer military bands to brass bands, but I do understand that tastes vary among people.
July 29th, 2011 at 7:24 am
Judas Priest is called British Steel for a reason. They’re Heavy Metal. Ever listened to Painkiller?
July 29th, 2011 at 10:34 am
Thank you Top of the Chain. My point exactly.
Priest is Metal. Every thing else simply strives to achieve their metalness.
To suggest their not metal . . . . well that’s like suggesting Engelbert Humperdinck is metal.
July 29th, 2011 at 4:51 pm
Priest? Without question. G n’R? yes.
Crew and VH? While great in their own right not true metal. Closer to hard pop rock. Possibly the Crew gets in under the wire. The scorpions went totally soft so they get the boot. Might as well say Winger.
Where is AC/DC? LA guns?
July 29th, 2011 at 5:01 pm
And I am sorry but Alice Cooper deserves some credit in there some where.

Are these popular-culture things you children are talking about, or something?
