After home invasion, gun sales up 400%
A run on shotguns. Handguns, barring a short barreled rifle, are probably the better choice for home defense. That depends on house layout, of course. Navigating hallways with long barrels can be problematic.

And 9mm is better than 40 cal. Or was it the other way around?

But…but…the rack of the slide sends a message! Buckshot! Spread!

“Navigating hallways with long barrels can be problematic.”
I thought that’s what the cleverly concealed gunports were for. No?

In terms of cost for stopping power, a pump action 12 gauge is hard to beat.

Don’t forget, here in CT you can’t buy or even possess a handgun without a pistol permit. If you don’t already have a pistol permit the process to get one is going to take you at LEAST 2-3 months. A shotgun or rifle can be had with “only” a 2 week waiting period if you don’t already have a pistol permit or hunting license.

Yeah, it must suck to live in a VolksRepublik. Wonder if they have a Magazine Capacity Limit on their 12 Gauges in Connecticut?

“Navigating hallways with long barrels can be problematic.”
This of course assumes you plan on navigating anywhere else other than to the master bathroom. That’s why you should have one of each! 😉

When people discuss home defense with me and consider a shotgun, I suggest that they walk around the house with a broom under one arm and have someone randomly say “boo” from behind them …

With this spike in local firearm ownership what do you all think the percentage decrease in crime will be?

Since we have no kids, my choice is the shotgun and staying put. One door into and out of the master bedroom makes for a good defensive position with a Mossberg 500A…

Mopar, it’s called living in a free state. You’re allowed to to leave CT. They haven’t put up a wall and barbed wire there…yet.
My plan would be to hole up in one room (the one with the gun safe) and basically ambush them.

He did good on the interview.
Gives the reason why shotguns are the forced choice in CT due to handgun laws, which may motivate some newly awakened folks to vote to loosen the reins.
Hits the proven “don’t scare the white people” NRA talking points on home defense: safe room, escape if possible, deadly force as last resort; that gets the point across but doesn’t give the journalist a blood-thirsty quote to twist.
Former teacher even, couldn’t pick a better mouthpiece.

I am with Jeff the Baptist, bang for the buck give me a pump shotgun. 18 inch barrel and collapsible stock cuts down on the swing and BB shot does not over penetrate like most handgun or rifle ammo.

“couldn’t pick a better mouthpiece”
Andy’s got plenty of experience there. Besides being a former teacher and current gunshop owner (one of the nicer shops in the state), he’s also a firearms instructor and hosts a pro-gun radio show on one of the local stations. Great guy.

SPQR —
I hear you, Brother, but some of us have slightly different logic gates than others.
Creep up behind me during that exercise and shout “BOO!”, and you’re going to get both ends of the broom in your face. (Buttstroke, jab, and buttsmash to the head — the exact order depends more on the geometry of the encounter.)
Either way, you’ll have gotten your face swept clean and a blunt stick poked into your eye, and you can sit there on the ground cursing (or laughing, if I missed the eye) while I point at you with a big stick, like Harry Potter. . . looking puzzled and verklempt for a second as I figure out why squeezing the bristles makes no noise. {chuckle}
I still prefer a semiauto carbine or pistol for an indoor manuever gun, and prefer a semiauto carbine above all, even for a stationary position gun — but the shottie (even if it’s a 36″ barrelled tight choked bird gun, preferrably loaded with buckshot rather than birdshot) wins hands-down over a handgun if I’m holed up defending the bedroom hallway against boarders.

Clearing your home is a mistake.
A pistol has a slightly higher utility while dialing for help, but that goes away once you put the phone receiver down.

Especially due to the fact that if they’re running down and getting one now there is very little, if any, training involved. Long gun = more stable platform. Carbine preferred. No house clearing for me unless I absolutely have to. Anything is better than a sharp stick, I guess.

Personally I prefer the let lose 400 pounds of two Great Danes then leisurely follow the screams until I can mercifully finish the fellow off with my Saiga or 1911 whilst the wife is on the phone to 911 with .357 magnum in hand.
And anyone who thinks the burglar will see them coming and shoot hasn’t spent enough time with dark colored dogs in a dark house. I live here and still have trouble picking them out.

It’s refreshing to finally find a group who actually knows what they are talking about. Seriously, with as much info as there is floating around on the internet, television, radio, and magazines, it is hard to know what to think anymore. I’m glad to know I am not the only guy who thinks this way.
