Registration leads to confiscation
In Australia, police take guns from people who are not criminals due to a shooting.

I’ve been to Australia a couple of times. Nice country with friendly people for the most part. However, freedom is a foreign concept to them. The do believe that the government should take care of their every need. I’m sure the majority of the population has no problem with this story.

Under these Ozzie Rules, if your Cousin’s Husband commits a crime, YOU lose your Guns because YOU didn’t pick the right Family before you were Born.
Hope they like it when the People’s Republic of China decides to Annex them in a few decades.

@Kevin Baker
We already have a registration program here in the U.S. Since firearm registration would never fly in this country, a “lite” version of it was put in place – also known as the background check. It was sold to the public as a “reasonable” measure – after all, you don’t want criminals or crazy people buying guns, do you? Don’t think for a minute that all of the information given for a background check doesn’t get stored for later use.
From the NICS records will be produced lists of probable firearms owners who will receive a “community safety audit” or whatever soft-language term is convenient, during which everyone will have the opportunity to voluntarily turn over any unregistered firearms. (Don’t mind the team of ‘roided up gun-toting linebackers in the room with us, they’re here for your safety)

@Ferret: But they can’t be certain they got them all, can they?
And if some turn in the ammo first . . .

If punishing the guilty is too hard, you have to punish the innocent.
Geeze; give the Aussies a break. They’re choosing the second most difficult plan. That’s, like, right near the most difficult.

@Kevin Baker
I agree, no registration, ever. I will ignore nasty notices and proclamations and beguiling invitations for amnesty programs. I will feign ignorance about firearm ownership.
If necessary, I will suddenly “lose” any weapons that I own, and they will be recovered at some later date, when needed.
Any government that would try to force me to turn in my weapons has breached our contract and will surely next turn on my First Amendment rights.
Never Again!
