Apple sucks
I realize that every time I stick my hand in my bag and I pull out that one useless ipod cable. Odd how all my other cables work with all my stuff but that one.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.

But that’s impossible. Apple can’t suck, because they keep telling us how they will make everything that’s not proprietary obsolete.

I guess it kind of depends on what system you’ve chosen, doesn’t it? I have an iPod, a personal iPhone, a work iPhone, and an iPod Nano. Everyone in my family uses an iPhone except my sister who lives 1,500 miles away and my dad. I don’t think I have anything that uses whatever mini/micro/nano-USB cable is the new standard. For me, if I pull out one iPod cord, the problem is that I probably need to find a second one so I can make sure everything is properly charged and synced.
That said, I had a MacBook a few years ago. It was awful, and I quickly went back to PCs.

I’ve got a Casio camera that uses a proprietary cable… wasn’t a big deal until I lent it to somebody and they lost the cable.

Apple also managed to get themselves excluded from the law mandating all cell phones use a standard connector.

Uncle,
Replace it or not, but you have to throw that damn cable out. Life is too short to keep crap gear around.
Chris,
In what country was such a law passed mandating that all cell phones use a standard connector. I know that reality defies satire, but that doesn’t seem like the kind of thing that could become law in the U.S.A..

I never heard anything about a law mandating standard cell chargers/cable. A quick Bing search found a few articles saying South Korea and China have passed laws/regs, didn’t see anything about the US.
I was hoping it was just market forces pushing them to standard cables, why redesign the silly thing for every single generation of phones.

Have you read some of our laws?
Seriously, though, it looks like it’s not a law, but a formal industry standard. They may be contractually obligated to follow it.

Funny, my iPhone and iPad both make use of the same cables, along with all my friend’s iPhones.
On the other hand, I have a useless cable that only works for charging my nook, because it isn’t quite a standard mini-USB.

Steve’s solution to that problem is to only use Apple stuff, that way the same cable fits everything 🙂

One of the many reasons why I love my Droid. Micro-USB cable, can buy replacements or redundants for pennies, they come in all sorts of colors and sizes, and chances are somebody needing a cable might be able to use yours.
Also I use Duracell portable device chargers for when I’m away from an outlet or computer. They use Mini-USB to charge up. I discovered I had a TON of Mini-USB chargers and cables just from older stuff that used it. threw the old stuff out, and kept the cables and chargers and still use them.
I hate proprietary cables because if you break or lose one, you #1. need to mail order a replacement, and #2. pay through the nose for one, which also makes redundant cables and chargers a pain.

I have different cables for my work Blackberry, my iphone, my casion digital camera, my other digital camera, and my portal hard drives (thankfully they all used the same damn cable).
As for universal, the same style of little USB that works for my blackberry always works for some blue tooth headsets, except that the charges themself don’t work between devices.
What is this magical cable of yours that works with everything but the i-thingys?

Yes. You are correct. And anyone who has ever been fooled into buy any of that Apple crap is clearly a rube. There is no value in any of their so called innovation or style. I use ownership of Apple products as a indication of a proclivity for inappropriate kid touching or potential frenchness. They suck and their thinking is muddled and their values are bad. Or, perhaps not.

It was/is an EU directive, and followed industry practice rather than causing it. That having been said, my ASUS tablet uses a proprietary cable, as do some others.

Apple is the H&K of the computer world.
