But I want them handling my health care and retirement
A government monopoly on a highly popular consumer good with a huge profit margin built into the price including taxes, and they still cannot make money.

I dunno, the few folks I know who still get govt pensions sure seem pretty happy about it these days.

Didn’t Nevada take over a brothel and run that straight into the ground? Why should this be a surprise?

I’d heard the brothel story, thought it was the Feds, but wasn’t able to find it archived on the web when I looked a couple of years ago. Would love to read the whole story on that!

NYS’ bookie (OTB) went bankrupt, that made me laugh.

We’re still in the Prohibition era. It’s time to end it once and for all, and get government OUT of the alcohol business entirely.
If a Republican politician can’t get behind such a simple, obvious and painless measure, he’s not our guy– he’ll bail at the first sign of difficulty. He has no principles and therefore can never be trusted. He’ll tell you he has your back, then he’ll shoot you in the back, to save his own flabby ass, as you lead the charge up the hill.

It’s the Mustang Ranch, and it’s out on the other side of Reno from the Rendezvous!
The brothel/govt. bit is kinda a legend. In 1990 Local authorities doomed it to failure. Just two weeks after the government took possession of Mustang Ranch, county commissioners banned prostitution there, saying they were tired of the “circus” surrounding the case.
It went bankrupt and the original owner who had fled the IRS to safety in Brazil, bought it back under a pseudonym. So the story isn’t quite right…

I left this comment at SIH …
I visited PA about two weeks ago … a 1.75l bottle of Crown Royal sells for $53.99.
I can get the same bottle and a 3lb bag of ice at my local liquor store in California for $34.99.
Mind you, in PA the state is the only one allowed to sell wine & liquor.
