Victory in Michigan: Safety Equipment Legalized

Michigan Attorney General opinion 7260 says it’s OK for law-abiding citizens to buy and use sound suppressors. It likely always has been but was never allowed in the state.

The press release notes the safety benefits of firearm suppressors. Suppress your firearms, it’s the polite thing to do:

While you can never completely silence a firearm, muffling the sound will be appreciated by neighbors in the vicinity of lawful firearm use.

Very cool.

Update: And then, there were 39.

Update 2: Years ago, I was told once by an NRA person that, no, NRA doesn’t generally bring up NFA items for a variety of reasons. Now, the NRA is quoted in press releases about suppressors! How far they’ve come!

Silencing is not a crime

Now, if we can just get it to where indivuidal Sheriffs dont have the discretion to deny ownership at will.

  2. Chas Says:

Markie Marxist sez: “We can’t allow private citizens to own suppressors! They’ll start wearing pin stripe suits and go around silently murdering shopkeepers who don’t pay them protection money, or something like that! Guns should be really, really loud, so that the private gun owners who shoot them have no privacy. We want them to be disturbing their neighbors as much as possible, to encourage their neighbors to support gun control. Besides, privacy is only for those on the political left. Our enemies aren’t supposed to get any privacy at all. Privacy is just for our friends, which is just the common communist sense way to do it. I mean, you don’t want us to be so ridiculous as to punish our friends and reward our enemies, like Republicans do, do you?”

Chas, I have never once found your marksie markist comments funny. I mean, I’m not trying to be a dick, but it’s really getting quite old.

Maybe you could try to shorten them up a little, that might be better. I could certainly be the minority, so feel free to ignore.

  4. Diomed Says:

    chris,

We’re getting there. ATF wants the CLEO signoff gone. Next year, hopefully, as the wheels of bureaucracy move slowly.

    Weird.

For quite some time (2003-2011), we had a guy named Mike Cox in that office in Michigan. He had an ‘R’ appended after his name. (The AG is an elected position in MI.)

People in Michigan who were interested in NFA stuff kept on wondering how to get him to give an opinion on suppressors. (Suppressors aren’t mentioned explicitly in State Law, so they fall into a gray zone which can be clarified by official Attorney General opinions.)

Bill Schuette also has that funny ‘R’ appendage on his name. This is his first year in office. He’s obviously not jumped into the subject of NFA items, but he apparently doesn’t shy away from the subject, either.

Now, it looks like he’s given his opinion, and it’s a positive one.

    Good news.

Just got an email from a buddy about this. Now where to start shopping????

  7. Shootin' Buddy Says:

At the Firearms Law Seminar in Pittsburgh last April two attorneys from NRA told me that NFA Reform (especially my idea of moving suppressors to Title I with federal preemption) was a non-starter. Both of them looked at me like I had asked them about the kings of Swaziland when I asked “what about Missouri”?

Missouri, now Michigan, if only the NRA would start attacking the NFA from the edges. However their response was “well, I have them myself, but no one where I live [Virigina] thinks it’s O.K.”

The bastards both have machine guns and don’t want their investment machine guns to decline in value. I called them on their treason and went for another Yuengling (that’s good stuff out there).

  8. Jim S. Says:

That is nice. Now let’s get rid of the $200 tax…

  9. Bubblehead Les Says:

So what are the other 11 states?

Chas: Marxie Markist should actually be a Blog. Might get a lot of Commies showing up for “Tea and Sympathy”, then, WHAMMO! Think about it.

  10. Beaumont Says:

How about this slogan: “Politeness should not be a crime.”

  11. ben Says:

I was shooting suppressed just today. It’s great.

  12. Bryan S. Says:

ATF wants rid of the CLEO sign off (because they probably dont trust local police) and i want rid of the ATF signoff.

See! We have so much in common!

  13. TIM Says:

What a great WIN.Now if I only lived there.

  14. MikeS Says:

As a Michigander, this comes as quite a suprise. It’s sure to cause a flood of Hippy tears.

Other than having the end of my barrell threaded to accept one, what flaming rings of bureaucracy must I jump through to get my hands on one?

  15. Jailer Says:

MikeS, same as any other NFA item.

Form 4, LEO sign off, passport pictures, fingerprints, $200 etc…..

Or the easier way is to find a dealer with one in stock that you want and have them walk you through it. Most should do this to facilitate the sale.

  16. NAME REDACTED Says:

“The bastards both have machine guns and don’t want their investment machine guns to decline in value. I called them on their treason and went for another Yuengling (that’s good stuff out there).”

And that is why the NFA won’t get removed through normal political channels. We need to get some hardcore pro-gun-rights people on the supreme court.

  17. NAME REDACTED Says:

    WINNING!

  18. Ron W Says:

“We need to get some hardcore pro-gun-rights people on the supreme court.” –NAME REDACTED

Yes! And hardcore for ALL of the Bill of Rights. But the right to choose what I will keep and carry for my own self-defense is the #1 right in my opinion. It has been that which determines the difference between free persons and slaves down through history.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
