Layers of editorial oversight

Rachel Gordon can’t even look up hollow point on the internet: The other, which has been on the books in various forms since 1994, prohibits the sale of hollow-point bullets and similar ammunition that fragments or explodes upon impact.

No, they don’t.

    From page 2:

“Hollow-point bullets actually cause mass destruction that is irreparable,” she said.”

Well, duh. That’s the whole idea..

  2. Weer'd Beard Says:

Odd that so many gun companies are making big money on bonded ammo that has “Near 100% weight retention” when I guess the whole point of Hollow Points is explosions and fragmentation.

I paid a good bit for my carry ammo, and I guess I was ripped off!

  3. Wolfwood Says:

Hmm. Does .17 TNT ammo count?

  4. HiddenHills Says:

I don’t read that as exploding hollowpoints. I read it as the referenced law prohibits ammunition comprised of hollowpoints, or are frangible, or are explosive.

I wonder how the SanFranSicko code is precisely worded.

What HiddenHills said – though in defense of Uncle’s interpretation I’ve seen that lots of people who Know Nothing About Guns seem to believe that “explosive ammunition” is Totally Commonplace – probably from seeing it in video games or something.

(I’d say “explosive ammo doesn’t exist”, but it does. If you have a .50, and are a government or have a $200 DD tax stamp per each, you too can get a Raufoss Mk211 explosive round!)

I thought the M41A1 fired standard 10mm caseless, explosive tip, light armor piercing rounds? And aren’t our Marines currently serving in Afghanistan and on Planet LV-426 using M41A1s? It would not be hard for a few Marines to sneek some ammo back.

    +1 Sid

Wow…In that article I read about bullets that I would LOVE to be able to pick up at my local range or Wally-World; a government-approved monopoly on ammunition sales in SF (didn’t CA recently prohibit online ammo sales? This clown must be making a killing!!!); and some dumbass kids, neither of whom had ever (apparently) been taught ANYTHING about safe handling of a firearm (or that you’ll get your ass beat if you put your hands on my f**king rifle without permission, boy!).

Yep…I’d say CA and their hippy-bullshit culture are to blame for the whole damned mess…

  9. Lyle Says:

Yeah well, some hollowpoints do explode. They of course don’t need any chemical explosive compounds to do it – just their own kinetic energy. They don;t call the light, .223 varmint rounds “varmint grenades” for nothing. My son has used some of the match HPs for hunting, and I can tell you from close inspection of several dead deer that they totally explode. Push even a light jacketed FMJ fast enough, spin it fast enough, and it’ll explode too.

All rounds, no matter how they’re constructed, explod when they hit a steel target square on, even if they’re only going 700 fps. Even AP rounds explode in that everything but the core comes apart on impact. My wife explodes often, but you don’t see anyone trying to outlaw her.

The main point though is that we’re nitpicking silly details and not arguing the basic principles of rights protection verses rights infringment.

And here I thought that an explosion required a rapid expansion of gas.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
