A holstered gun is a happy gun

Stop touching it:

During a staff meeting last week, Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Charles Hurley pulled out his .40-caliber Glock pistol, unloaded the magazine and placed the bullets on a meeting room table.

He says it was an impromptu demonstration to stress the dangers facing officers and students during a recent spate of shootings. Some in the room, however, say they felt it was a display meant to intimidate.

What you’ve done here, Sparky, is increase the likelihood of a negligent discharge from zero to some number larger than zero. Stop it.

Cut him some slack. He is the only one professional enough to……

  2. Bram Says:

Did he clear it properly, keep the slide open, and the weapon pointed in a safe direction? If so, I don’t have a problem.

  3. NPVIRR Says:

Is anyone else wondering if Mr. Only One actually cleared the chamber?

…and if a school district has its own police dept, haven’t we long since passed over some sort of Rubicon?

  4. Tam Says:

    Bram,

Did he clear it properly, keep the slide open, and the weapon pointed in a safe direction?

Given the setting, I doubt it.

Further, though, excessive coon-fingering of a loaded pistol during the course of the day just shows an extremely casual acquaintance with gun safety.

Could I safely unholster and clear my pistol at my desk right now? Sure.

Would I? No. There’s no reason for me to. All that extra, unnecessary finger-banging of weapons is where unexpected loud noises come from.

    He’s black?

The Dangers faced on the Street? What, the Chief felt he didn’t have enough Ammo in a Glock 40 to handle the Kids who were bringing AKs to Class or Something? What’s Next? ARs w/ Betamags for the Cafeteria?

  7. Paul Says:

Did he check the chamber or just drop the mag?

Gad are they stupid or what?

  8. Speakertweaker Says:

Bringing a box of ammo would have provided you with bullets to show-and-tell during your little meeting. A spare mag would have been just as effective if it just had to be spur-of-the-moment. Jerking the Glock Fo-Tay is just dumb. FatWhiteMan nailed it.

Hurley insisted that the pistol was just a prop meant to underscore the need to step up policing.

A pistol is not a prop. If you want props call Hollywood where they have professionals in handling guns as props. You know one of their rules, no live ammo in the vicinity.

He said several firearms instructors were on hand, ensuring safety, and the weapon was not waved or pointed at anyone.

Yes, firearm instructors in the room ensure safety when some idiot is handling his firearm in a crowded room.

  10. emdfl Says:

Why do I suspect that this blithering idiot did NOT clear the chamber of his Glock before laying it on the table?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
