Easier, but not better. The gas tube going through the scalloping on the barrel nut is a feature. It keys the barrel nut in place so it can’t loosen in use. This system has no mechanism to key the nut other than tension. Not as good.
Also you can make the barrel nut out of the hardest most awesome steel in the universe, but you’re still attaching it to an upper receiver made out of f’ing aluminum. It’s actually far better for the barrel nut to be a wear part than the receiver itself. Which is what they just did.
