The was never privacy, but there was obscurity, which is oftentimes a very practical substitute. Now, with the ability to rapidly chew through mountains of data, and the fact that most people actively facilitate the generation of massive amounts of uncontrolled personal data, the obscurity is much harder to come by.
You can also take advantage of information though through obfuscation.. Too much information that conflicts with each other is the same as too little information.
