Chromebooks

I’m kind of interested in one of these Chromebooks, an internet only type of netbook. Anyone play with one?

All reviews say they suck, and are overpriced to boot. From what I’ve seen you can do less with one than with a base model iPad, your Apple distate notwithstanding.

I got one of the beta models to test (I have no idea why, luck maybe, or my Google Fandom). Anyway, it is not nearly as nice as the commercial model on Amazon, but I love it. I think ultimately it depends on what you want to do, I use mine as a replacement cookbook in the kitchen, a web surfer in the living room, and occasionally as a document editor using Google Docs (spreadsheets and letters, mostly). It works great for all those functions. Then again, I got it free and I am not sure I would drop $350 on it. I also just got a $150 HP Touchpad, and it fills that same role very well. JMHO/YMMV.

Well, Google Fans, just remember that your fave system is also famous for databasing everything you do, all the time.

I found Chrome to be very streamlined, when it first came out. When I started reading the boards and discovered I was giving my privacy away by the byte, I deleted it and haven’t been back to ANY Google product since. I use Firefox exclusively now.

A machine which only ran Google products would have your entire life cataloged in short order.

Barring the chicken little reviewer, as a IT coordinator who purchases hardware and works directly with vendors such as Google, Cisco, SirsiDynix, etc…the chrome books make more sense in a school environment. I have used most of the chromebooks and they work for what they are intended for…in saying that I use a ipad (I’m not much of a apple fan either) for looking at the net while on the deck or watching tv…it’s size and speed makes it easy for web surfing – remembering that flash doesn’t work on ipads.

For the same price, I can buy a netbook (or a low end full sized laptop), through whatever flavor of Linux I want on it, and truly own my device. I’ve been too many places where I couldn’t get wifi and there was no cell signal (doesn’t matter who you’re with). The Chromebook is an interesting idea, but too much of it is tied to the cloud.

At that price, I’ll get a netbook, or I’ll just spend a little extra and get a real computer.

Just get a bluetooth keyboard and portable stand for your Android tablet.

John Scalzi used a CR-48 for a while and wrote about it on his blog. (Here’s a link to all the posts that mention the CR-48.)

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
