I dunno…my wife has volunteered to help teach the MN DNR firearms safety to kids. They look about the same age.
‘Course, that’s not done during government-school time, but it’s still done on the public dime. Firearms safety and familiarization is one of the few things a government school could actually do that I’d support.
Used to be on the High School Rifle Team back in the 70’s, and we carried our weapons in and out of the School all the time, so it wasn’t all that long ago.
I teach one of those every year at my local school. The difference is I do all the gun handling in the classroom.
There is another shooting program with the 4H, and another with the Scouts, so kids in our school have three options for shooting classes and competition. Then there’s the Appleseed program and Boomershoot.

They should not have to learn from an off duty officer.
The school should have a proper firearms program, under the PE department.
