Need a .45?

Larry Vickers says to either get the $600 gun or the $600 gun that costs $900.

M&P45 runs just south of $500 around here.

But the HK has better stopping power against lava men!

  2. M Gallo Says:

Uuggh. I really want to update my USP with a HK45, but I also really liked shooting the M&P45. If nothing else, the M&P threaded barrels are only $70-110, instead of almost $300 for the HK units. Either way, I’ll start a fight by saying the 1911 is worthless if you’re not shooting 38 Super out of it… which come to think of it, is what people should be shooting instead of the worthless .40. OK, flame on.

  3. TennGoodBoy Says:

Look at FN if you must have a plastikk gun…

  4. aczarnowski Says:

What’s with all the FN love lately? Comment threads all over the place seem to be teaming with “Check out the FN45.” Did somebody start making holsters for them or something? 😉

  5. Sigivald Says:

I don’t remember having to be my own armorer with my crappy Norinco 1911, myself. Being crappy, rather than trying to be a race gun, it’s loose enough to simply function…

(And frankly, I’d get a Glock before an HK. Because HK hates me.)

  6. weambulance Says:

I’ll stick with Glock for my plastic, though I went 9mm instead of 45.

I tried the M&P, didn’t like it much. I may still buy one (9mm) for long term evaluation. I hated the feel of the M&P45 for some inexpressible reason. My HK P30L is very comfortable, but I prefer a Glock faux SA trigger to the LEM or DA/SA available, and I don’t want to change my manual of arms for the mag release. I have an XD45 and I shoot it extremely well even though the trigger sucks, but I can’t buy a spare extractor so I won’t rely on it. I haven’t been able to find an FNP 9 locally, but the FNP 45 feels like it needs some sanding to really fit my hand right.

I reached the breaking point with my 1911s recently when I bought a new Springfield Loaded 1911-A1 that seemed fine on my in-store inspection, but has given me more trouble than the other 16 1911s I’ve owned combined–and I’ve had some real turds pass through my hands. Sloppy loose FPS fit that let the extractor clock (fixed); rough chamber that gave me failures to return to battery every 5 rounds (fixed); and some odd relationship between the (now properly tensioned) extractor, unnecessarily extended, unpinned and glued in ejector, and sharp edged ejection port that I haven’t quite figured out yet reliably giving me jams that lock the gun up so hard I need tools to clear it. Oh, and the recoil spring was worn out in under 200 rounds, if the near orbital ejection of my brass and 1″ shortening vs a new Colt spring were reliable indicators.

I don’t mind being my own armorer–I like working on 1911s, and I’ve certainly got enough experience at it–but I expect to start working on a pistol after like 3000-5000 rounds, not right out the gate with a brand new 1911 from a reputable manufacturer.

I tried the plastic .45s a while back and liked the M&P best. I wound up buying a CZ 97B, though. :^D Plastic guns got no soul.

  8. HL Says:

I have a USP45, and though it is older than the HK45, I love it. Bought it NIB on Gunbroker for $500 last summer. Yes, it doesn’t have changeable backstraps, so you’d better have big hands, which I do.

The FN45 is really sweet gun too. Essentially, it is the USP45 with changeable backstrap, which is like saying it is an HK45, I suppose, but less expensive.

  9. Beaumont Says:

Hmmm, a choice between a $600 gun made by Americans and a $900 gun made by people who hate Americans. Gee, that’s a poser.

I got a lightly used HK P30L for a steal (~ $650, with holsters and extra mags). Not long after, I got to try Uncle’s M&P9. I almost overlapped the bullet holes at 7 yards with his gun.

The only reason I don’t regret sticking with the P30 for the time being is that I am in the middle of having limited use of my left arm for a few months, and the P30 is the only thing I own that is frighteningly easy to use with a cast on your weak hand.

There’s no way I could manage a 2.18 second reload with anything else I own.

I’ll still hate on the USPs. But the P30 and HK45 are pretty freaking handy at times.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
