I can’t say as I’m terribly sympathetic to Jay Dobyns, (who’s ‘case’ against the Hell’s Angels largely consisted of entrapment, and flat out lies. ) . Still, it’s nice to see that the Obama administration has finally found a patsy in William Newell. For them, the old news, and I do mean -old-, of the Black Biscut fiasco gives them a perfect scapegoat. Stupid, venal, unlikable, and -almost- believable.
I’d heard part of this before; I’d no idea the bastards in charge had screwed it this badly. As I recall, when he first went to his boss and advised him of the threat and asked to get his family in witness protection, the excuse given at the time for not doing it was “Well, you’re REQUESTING a transfer, so this has to be handled as a routine personnel matter.”
Urso, I may be mistaken but what I read a few years back was that he gathered a lot of hard evidence; it was largely ATF brass and an idiot prosecutor that screwed up the evidence and a lot of the cases.
You know, with this kind of history- and this isn’t the only ‘screw the troops over’ in ATF history- it’s amazing that agency can get any actual good cops to work there.
