The choice is far from critical. Mine was very simple; since we see far more anterlerless deer that racked bucks where I hunt, and since muzzleloader season permits the taking of “three-point minimum or antlerless” which means almost any deer, I go for a muzzleloader tag. Since I have one muzzleloader rifle and it’s of a decent caliber, I use that– a 50 cal sidelock percussion jobbie from Lyman.
I bought that rifle because it was the only ML in stock in town at the time I decided I needed one. I then hunt an area where a very close encounter is likely, and only take shots I know I can make with that rifle.
How’s that for intense ballistic science and firearm selection theory?
