Rimfire for defense
Oleg looks at the option, for people who cannot fire other guns:
By this comparison, we can expect a magazine dump from a sporting semi-auto .22 rifle to have an effect similar to a single shotgun blast.

Only if you hit with a similar number of “pellets” in a similar amount of time. Both of which I doubt.

I should say it’s better than nothing though.

Oh, I don’t know. One shot from my old Ruger 10/22 worked fine to get rid of the Burglar who wouldn’t take “No” for an answer. I figured that A) since that’s what the Local Gun Laws allowed me to have at that time and place the 10/22 would put out enough rounds to at least Wound the Bastard enough to allow me to B) to beat on the Bastard while he was bleeding from a half a dozen .22 holes with the Rifle. You can do some serious hurting with a wood stocked rifle in your hands.
But since this happened long before Glocks were born, I’d still only use a .22 as a Last Resort, or if one can ONLY have that much Recoil due to Age, Injury, etc. But don’t discount them for Home Defense. Just don’t put a .22 up FIRST unless you absolutely have to. YMMV, of course.

Peter Grant mentioned a case of an elderly couple attacked in their home. The husband was in a wheelchair, but the wife had a Marlin 60 and gave the perp all that the tube magazine held. DOA, looking like a sieve. The entire mag dump took under five seconds. I’ve seen people hit 4-5rds per second with complete control. I’d rather have a bigger weapon, but people who can’t deal with recoil or weight might want to consider 22LR — it sucks a lot less than people think 🙂

Many years ago, one of my pistol instructors stated that, insufficient as it may be, 22LR at that time had been used for some large percentage of recorded firearm defenses. His theory was simply that more people had 22s around. Sorry I can’t be more specific, but the basic notion stuck with me. Things have changed a lot since concealed carry has swept through the states.

It’s a great training round. I use a 410 to .22Lr adapter in my Judge It’s an economical way of working on flinch control.

First rule of the gunfight remains bring a gun. A .22 is a damn sight better then throwing rocks.
