Ruger 22/45

Since I’m in the market for a new 22 pistol to suppress, here’s a look at the Ruger 22/45. I’m leaning toward the MKII since Ruger managed to ruin the MKIII by making it so safe Mitt Romney would let you own it in MA.

If I’m not mistaken, the loaded chamber indicator can be plugged up, and he magazine disconnect can be cut out.

I understand where you’re coming from though. My safety is to not pull the trigger!

  2. JimB Says:

Majestic Arms makes an easy take-down kit for the Ruger. It eliminates the mag disconnect and improves the trigger. Check t out at Brownell’s

  3. Dave D. Says:

I love the Ruger MKIIs and still have my dad’s old one as well as a MKIII/22/25. However, you might want to check out the Buckmarks. They are as accurate and much easier to take down and clean, in my opinion. Plus you can get one of these: http://www.tacticalsol.com/tshome/trail-lite-barrel-upgrade-for-the-browning-buck-mark-pistol and have a super light weight tack driver. The mag safeties can be easily removed from both the 22/45s and the Buckmarks.

  4. N Says:

A vote in favor of the 22/45. You can get one with a threaded barrel and semi-standard 1911 grips.

  5. Homer Says:

If you run across a MKII 22/45, lemme know. I’ll take one.

  6. Newbius Says:

Need a replacement barrel for a MKII if you are going to get a suppressor. The MKIII is offered with a threaded barrel from the factory, and the annoying bits are easily fixed for very little money (like a couple of bucks), with no permanent change to the gun (no warranty issues). Cheaper to get the MKIII.

  7. Shootin' Buddy Says:

All my 22/45 MkIIs have the Majestic Arms speed strip. I bought my first one when Dino was selling out of the back of Guns & Ammo in the mid-90s. Finally met him at the NRA Meeting in Pittsburgh. Nice guy.

Anywho the Speed Strip kit is highly recommended. I think you will be very happy with the 22/25 (MkII or MkIII).

Another one is the Smith 22A. The ones I have shot (a few) all run without hiccups.

  8. Sean D Sorrentino Says:

According to Volquartsen, their Mark II trigger kit can be installed in the Mark III pistol, giving you a better trigger and no mag drop safety.

  9. Monte Says:

While I hate the ridiculous “safety” BS that Ruger added to the MKIII, I do kind of like the new magazine release placement. And, as others have said, the “safety features” can be eliminated.

  10. Mr. B Says:

You can, as others have said, easily remove the mag safety. Us several aftermarket choices for better triggers. (BTW, the article is wrong, the MKIII has the same type of mag release as the firearm you reference, not the heel mag release).

For real fun and excitement, buy a Tactical Solutions upper. Cuts the weight by a lot(like half).

And do yourself a favor, take the pistol apart and reassemble it 5 or 10 times (you’ll need the manual for the first few) to learn the dance. Once you have learned it, it is easy. Until then, you’ll be confused.

  11. Lyle Says:

I like my MkII, but understand that it is picky with regard to ammunition.

What Mr.B said; disassembly, and more importantly, reassembly, takes a little bit of getting used to. Then it’s no problem.

  12. Mopar Says:

Get the mkIII with the replaceable grip panels so you can use 1911 grips on it. As for the “safety” bs, that’s simple. Spend $5 and order the mkII hammer bushing. Install the new hammer bushing and ooopsie, no place for that silly mag disconnect. Guess ya gotta toss it. 🙂 While you’re in there drop in a Volquartsen target sear and trigger. Cleaning is simpler (not simple) with the mag disconnect gone, and the mags drop free.

  13. SDN Says:

My 22/45 is wonderful to shoot and a PITA to clean. I have seen licensed gunsmiths take 45 minutes to get it to come apart and go back together. At one stage, the magazine must be in the gun, at another out….

  14. Tommy Says:

Another vote for the MkII 22/45. And a rubber mallet to disassemble/reassemble it.
    😀

  15. Jake Says:

If I could have found a Mk II in my price range I would have bought it in a heartbeat, but I couldn’t, so I got the Mk III instead. Despite the lawyer features, it’s still a wonderful gun. As a bonus, the Mk III’s come pre-drilled and tapped for a rail, and have a rail with mounting screws included in the box. I don’t think they did that with the Mk II.

  16. harley Says:

I love my MkII 22/45, but the damm mag ejects always seems to be bumped when i shoot.

  17. Sebastian Says:

  18. Sebastian Says:

The big problem I have my my 22/45 is that the grips are small for my hand, and you have far fewer grip choices for that line than for the standard Mk. II/Mk III lines.

  19. grego Says:

Sadly, I wanted to like the mkIII 22/45 but it was nto to be. I have one that only after a load of work did the trigger improve enough to be called horrible (before that would have been an insult to all the truly horrible other triggers out there). Had I the ability to do that purchase over again, I would have skipped that pistol entirely. After you take away the bad trigger it still has that wonderful feature that I really hate…. magazine use durring disassembly.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
