Good read, lots of details.
Interesting that the article tries to give a sinister feel to a gun show where most people buy one or two items.
But the suspicious purchasers are young, have clean records, and want to pay cash for 30 or more rifles…
It is sad that the article contends the current situation is a patchwork of hard-to-enforce law. Because, of course, the suspicious buyer was suspected by the ATF of being in the bag for a smuggling cartel.
And the ATF was encouraging the whole thing to continue, even after they realized that they were losing most of the guns. Shameful.

And the dealer involved can still be prosecuted.
Helping the police with any kind of a federal sting without first getting a grant of immunity from the US Attorney and a Federal Judge from you district is a bad idea.
Mere cops cannot give you permission to break the law.
