They got the reason for the law wrong.
Adding silencers to the NFA registry was a last minute substitution for pistols.
The whole reason behind taxing SBRs and SBSs was to prevent loopholes for avoiding registering a pistol.
If FDR had gotten all he wanted, we would be filling out Form 4s to buy a handgun.
and the stamp would have been $1000 in 1934 dollars
More than that. Price of gold in 1934 was $35/ounce. It is $1712 today.
So that $200 1934 dollars would be $9782 2011 dollars.
Or was that the proposed 1934 price of the stamp?
Dear lord. Could you imagine having to pay $49000 for a tax stamp for a pistol?
