Pansies Converted Daily
A controversial billboard. When did pansie start meaning gay? I thought it meant girly or effete.

I took a Gay gentleman to the range. He’s a big burly guy who grew up in the woods of North Carolina. He burned through most of my .357 handloads that day.
Sure he has a boyfriend and does some stereotypical “Gay” things, but I wouldn’t call him a “Pansy”.
Meanwhile there are lots of straight men who watch sports and ogle women who are firmly in the “Pansy” sect.

I am an 50 man and have heard and used the word pansy in reference to queers since the 1960’s.

Some people have to bitch about everything don’t they…

As a lesbian, I’m frankly not all that offended by the billboard. I’ve heard and read worse. I see why it’s stupid and is offensive to folks, but I’m a little more thick skinned at my age, I guess.
Then again, I carry…so unless someone tries to gay bash me…I don’t actually care much what someone else thinks about my life or has to say about it.

The only people offended are the real pansies.

I never associated that word with sexual orientation. It just means “whimp” or “pussy” or “whussie” which is a combination of the two.
Any word can mean anything to anyone. It has made me distrustful of language.

I know a lot of pansies who aren’t gay. I know a couple of homosexuals who love their guns.
We’ve raised a generation of people who are professional victims with permanent chips on their pansie shoulders.

I’ve heard it used in both contexts – though when it’s used to mean “gay” it’s usually intended in an indirect or hinting manner (I know there’s a more appropriate term for what I’m trying to get at, I just can’t remember it right now).
As a gay man, I’m not offended by the billboard, though like Tina I can see how some people might be. I also think it’s just stupid.

The people need to stop being pansies and butch up.

I’m 60 and remember pansy and queer being pretty much synonymous when I was a kid. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. 🙂

Funny you should mention that billboard. I drove by it in Winston-Salem this past Sunday. I almost turned the car around to take a picture of it.
I remember my reaction as being more than a little surprised by it.

I’m gay. It’s not exactly a huge secret.
I also like guns both as recreation (recoil therapy is our FRIEND!) and as a practical means of leveling the playing field should I have the misfortune to run across one of natures little sociopaths. That’s not a huge secret either. I generally object to assault, and find bigotry-based assault to be extra-special distasteful.
Frankly, I think the billboard is tacky as all get-out – but in a busy world full of actual badness, not worth getting all wound up over. Worthy of perhaps, at most, a nasty letter or (should whimsy strike) arranging an expedition from the local Pink Pistols or Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to go shooting.
After all, shattering paradigms can be ALMOST as much fun as shooting Tannerite…

Eh, if a poor pun is what offends you then that’s OK by me.
However, as a Winston-Salem resident, the thing that offends me about Pro Shots is that they prohibit entering the shop with loaded guns. In other words, lawfully carried concealed weapons are unwelcome.
And yes, I did disarm, go in and ask. I also emailed and asked again, w/o any answer. This speaks volumes.
They know ~exactly~ what they’re doing.

Jim-bowb, It’s standard practice at most ranges/gun stores. It’s an insurance liability thing. Pure BS but if they dont put the signs up they have a chance of their insurance dropping them.
However, I dont think the signs apply to legally carried concealed pistols,IIRC.
