Neat idea – never would have thought of it. I’ve been using “lizard litter” or bird littter(crushed walnut) from the pet stores for a couple of years now with excellent results. It also doubles as a cleaning media in my tumbler. 5# for $10 here: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753590 They also have a 25# bag for $23. The aquarium gravel is cheaper by a fair amount though. Thinking out loud: I suppose you could recycle used walnut media for sandbags…

I filled mine with rice. Light, soft, and in a pinch I can eat it.
